I get a clunking sound ever so often . What do you think that could be?
Any sound out of the ordinary inside a computer is bad, and there’s no way to tell (especially since I have no idea what you mean by ‘clunk’). Open up your copmuter while it’s on (don’t touch anything!) and listen carefully to find out what it is. If you aren’t sure what something is, ask a friend or relative who knows a bit about computers and have them help you out.

Fan was what I first thought of… but Spike is right, could be anything… good luck!
Is it a sound like something falling or getting hit, or a snapping sound? I know the floppy drive can be noisy at, seemingly, random times when it attempts to access a disk that isn’t in there. Go into My Computer, then double-click on the A drive (both with and without a disk in there) and see if it’s the same sound.
Other than that, yeah, a fan is the only other thing I can think of…an optical drive could be malfunctioning somehow and accesses randomly, like the floppy, but that’s the least likely of the three I’ve mentioned.
