According to the MSN Messenger 6.1 internal preview site, the next release will incorporate new additions to the Launch Site menu:
- Hexic – a two-player puzzle game from the creator of Tetris. If you want to get an edge on your skills, you can play the single player version now at the Zone.
- Emoticon Factory – Tools to help you create your own custom emoticons; blank face shapes you can customize with eyes, ears, nose and hair stamps; fun stamps for accessorizing; and draing tools for doodling. You can invite a friend and make them together.
- MSN Photos Plus – Share a slideshow of photos in real time with your friend.
Microsoft is reportedly adding “premium” features that will only be available to paid MSN subscribers. Its not clear yet what features might be restricted or commercialized, but I expect that most if not all of the features described will be available for free to all MSN Messenger users.
One other item of concern for developers of third-party plug-ins like Messenger Plus! is a small note tucked away on the 6.1 known issues page, which states:
Third Party Add-in Applications
MSN has investigated reports that some third party add-in applications are causing the MSN Messenger application to suffer degraded performance and varying degrees of unstable operation. In order to experience the best performance with MSN Messenger, you should uninstall third party MSN Messenger add-in applications you have installed which may be causing stability issues and report these issues to the third party application vendors.I dont think this is cause for alarm yet, but it is indicative of Microsofts attitude towards unauthorized third-party add-ons. Basically Microsoft wants full control of Messenger.
