I received the following question via email:
Quote:quote:I have MSN and a friend has AOL. Is it possible to IM each other and if so could it be done without other people seeing the messages? Please tell me what steps we would have to take to make this possible. I share a computer in a household and would prefer if only I could see the IM.The one thing that you will need is IM accounts on the same IM network (either AOL Instant Messenger or MSN Messenger). You cannot currently send an instant message from a MSN Messenger account to an AIM account.
The good news is that you can setup a MSN Messenger and/or an AIM account for free.
Finally, either program will allow you to set it up in such a way that you must log-in to use it. No one else in your family will receive instant messages meant for you unless you’re logged in. Just make sure the program is setup to not save your password, and probably to not run automatically on startup.

July 7, 2003 at 7:36 pm #61788shifterMemberWhich part is lame? She will still need IM accounts on the same IM network no matter which IM client she chooses to use. What I think is lame is your attempt to discredit Jeff’s great advice. For simplicity sake, I would have recommended the exact same advice Jeff did. Alternative IM clients are generally too confusing for new IM users, its best to stick with the official ones when starting out – in my opinion. So if you feel so strongly about MECA, why not back up your statement as to why using MECA will work better? Provide us with some better insight and reasoning.

Well, this is interesting. Wanna let us in on how, what version of MSN does your friend use? Was this recently or was it a long time ago that you did this? Can you still talk with this friend?
