I use yahoo im intensively at work and has just been told that the company will be using software to archive all instant messages. The IT person told me that if I want to have im conversations with my friends, I should sign up for MSN or AOL messenger, so the company will not automatically archive my conversations. My question is – if I retain my old Yahoo id and log on via Trillian – can they still track? The IT guy told me that if I log on to Yahoo thru Trillian, they can still track – coz the software tracks all yahoo IMs, but not the others like MSN and AOL etc….I don’t quite understand the logic. Can someone please help? Currently, while I’m at work – I have a separate Yahoo id for work (with biz contacts) and I log onto my personal Yahoo via Trillian – so both are active at the same time.

Use google talk, I believe they encrypt conversations….
They could “track”, record, and do basically anything they want to. Now legally its not so clear. I believe they are not supposed to get into your personal stuff, but then again, you shouldn’t be doing personal/incriminating/embarassing deeds while you are working. Its their computer, their internet access, and their time, except for lunch time, unless its paid time also. Breaks are still on their dime. They have more rights than you do, especially if they warn you. Your IT department should publish rules for you to go by.
That’s too true, the rules have changed. If you want to chat… do it at HOME. The news is that it doesn’t matter if you type it, then delete it without sending it the keystroke keeps track of whatever you typed. Your ” IT” guy doesn’t really care about you.. does he? Or whether you chat or not? I would suggest that you keep your work time.. your work time.. and chat time at home. If I was going to get caught for something… I wouldn’t want it to be chat!:D
I’m using web IM services from http://www.imunitive.com which works with all Yahoo, MSN and AIM accounts. They offer encrypted session. It’s a web base software, wonder how the company can track it. Even the company track your session, it’s encrypted, all they got is a bunch of codes.
