I’m new here so please excuse this question. I know next to nothing regarding IM. I have MSN. A friend has AOL. Can we use IM and if yes how do we set it up. Also I share a computer in a household so can it be kept private. Would other people see the IM?
Thanks, GYou can’t IM people from MSN to AOL unless you have trillian installed. However, this is only a cheat. To “set it up” go to http://www.trillian.cc download and install it.
Sharing a computer isn’t a problem. The only way someone else could see your IM’s is if they put a packet sniffer on your server but I seriously doubt anyone could be bothered to do that. If they did, slap them and tell them to get out more. Then slap them again.
Yes, AOL IM/AIM is safe to use.
I don’t know if it is necessary to delete .tmp files after you sign off AOL IM/AIM to ensure nothing is left for other parties to see/read dialgoues. Maybe someone here will have the answer for that.

Would we both have to download “trillian”?
Also MSN6 asks if you want your chats logged as ‘.log’ files in My Documents>(My Chat Logs or My Recieved Files) depends on the version.
lol you wouldn’t both need trillian. Just one of you needs it, whether you both want to be able to chat to different networks is another matter.

I remember going to tmp files and have found some of my AIM chat logs in there. I do not use AIM much, only MSN Messenger and ICQ.
The registry stores some records from MSN (according to the last time I looked). It had some stuff in there like who I had blocked on my Buddy List. I didn’t see any chat logs though.
What you are looking for is something called interoperability and it is something we would like all instant messaging clients to have. But unfortunately most IM services only allow you to communicate with others exclusively on there own programs. For example: AIM users can only talk with other AIM users.
So in order to talk to your friend, you will now need to sign up for an account with the other IM service, in this case AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
Once you have an active account with them you have two choices. You can either:
A) Download and install the AOL IM client and run it seperately along with your MSN client.
or
B) Download and install a program such as Trillian which allows for interoperablity..or in other words, you can run both MSN Messenger and AIM accounts in one single client.Its really up to you which way you prefer. You can find out more about the different IM clients here at the BBB
As for the chat logging, each client has its own settings, and all should have an option for switching logging on or off.
