MemberRecently I fried almost everything on my computer, my motherboard, my cpu, and my hardrive. So I just replaced everything yesterday, but today when I was going to open my case to add a fan to my gfx card, the computer would not shut down completely! I press the power button, and windows shuts down and the screen goes black, but all the fans in the case are still on, but the hardrive isnt spinning. So for now all I can do is unplug the power supply to turn it off. I am running on Microsoft Windows XP Home, and I have a MSI MS-6738 motherboard, and an AMD Athlon xp Thouroughbred prossesor. If anyone knows why this might have happened, or how to fix it, please tell me. Thanks

Memberdo you have the fans connected to the mobo or directly to power sources? maybe its going into hibernate instead of shutting off.

MemberThe 5 case fans are running directly from the power supply, and the fan on my GPU and CPU are running on the motherboard. But just after I submitted this thread, my computer randomly shut down and wouldnt start again. I unplugged the power supply, reset the bios, and unplugged the wires from the moherboard and plugged everything in again and it still didnt work. I am very dissapointed because this motherboard-cpu combo kit was just purchased a few days ago.

MemberDid you make sure that all your hardware was compatible with your mobo? I tried to use a Radeon 9600 XT on a mobo that wasn’t compatible with it (I didn’t know) and was having similar issues. I ended up checking the motherboards website and finding out it wasn’t compatible. Are you using any old parts from your fried computer? Make sure that is also compatible with your new CPU and Mobo.

MemberYes, all the hardware is compatible, everything that I was using worked yesterday, and no im not using anything but the powersupply from the old one, but it worked yesterday. It didnt boot when I set it up outside the case either, so I dont think its shorting anywhere, but the problem will be solved because im going to send it back and get an abit motherboard and the same processor from newegg.com

MemberAre you sure your software isn’t to blame? Personally, if I encountered a computer with Windows on it that goofs up, I’d start with formatting the harddrive and reinstalling the OS. 🙂

MemberThe software can be VERY much to blame. I have been having problems with my main computer at this moment. After installing my ATI (video card) drivers my computer goes to a blue screen when logging in, when booting, when trying to format the Hard Drive, randomly when logged in, when trying to install anything, etc etc.
If you do start from a clean boot, I suggest installing all windows updates before adding any other software. Often times software like drivers and so on will only work with windows SP1 and Direct-X 9. So I would be careful with what order you install things.

MemberI cant re-install windows, or install linux because the computer doesnt boot at all.

MemberI’d take it all apart and do it all exactly by the instructions, if you havent already. I guess this doesnt seem relevant since you have booted your system earlier, but is your power supply large enough for all your components?

If all your connections are good and done properly then you have fried either:
Motherboard
RAM
Video card
Or CPU.Send the motherboard and CPU back as you said you were, then you can start to troubleshoot. Welcome to the fun world of computers, Heh!

MemberThanks, the good news is that I can send it back, and now Im going to order online like I wanted to before, and spend less money for a better system:
ABIT “NF7” nForce2 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU – $69.00
AMD 45 Watt Mobile Athlon XP 2400+, 266FSB, 512K Cache – $77.00
Thermalright CPU Cooler – $56.99
Kingston ValueRAM 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-2700 – $47.00And if I can earn a little more money:
POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9600XT ULTRA – $159.00Does anyone know if there are any compatability issues with any of these? I really dont want to have to RMA anything.

ParticipantWhy a mobile AMD?
Why only 256MB of RAM, but a $60 CPU cooler?
PowerColor video cards aren’t very good.

Im getting the mobile because it runs cooler, being a laptop processor.
Im getting only 256mb RAM because Im saving money with 3 of my friends to get a server.
The PowerColor was just a thought. Also, im no longer getting that kind of ram, I am getting this:
OCZ Enhanced Latency Series 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200July 13, 2004 at 10:19 pm #42307mrblonde608
ParticipantJust a tip Shadow.
Don’t buy RAM with odd names that you’ve never heard of. It’s best to buy a name brand so that it will last, and it at least comes with a warranty. The brand I’ve found to be best is Crucial. Had but one stick die, and they replaced it within a week.

ParticipantI don’t think that CPU will work on that motherboard, but ok.
OCZ and Crucial are fine RAM, mrblonde.
