MemberHello. I am having problems with my AOL Instant Messenger from it constantally being disconnected from every 3 to 15 minutes or even longer. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is being disconnected because of my new wireless router. I had an old router that I used to use, and I never had encouterd this problem before. Because it’s wireless, it dumps the connection from my messenger which honestly, really pisses me off. Anybody have any suggestions on how I can fix my router problem? Don’t suggest me putting back my old router, because well.. I sold it. And also, I was wondering what you guys could give me regarding 3rd party instant messengers that run AIM, and have all the same plug-ins as AIM 5.9. Something besides Trillian or Gaim. Thank you for your time.

MemberFollow this if you haven’t tried it already:
Right click on My Network Places and choose Properties. Right click on Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties. Choose the Wireless Networks tab and under the Preferred networks section, choose the network you are connected to and click on Properties. On the Authentication tab, uncheck Enalbe IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network.
This hopefully will stop your computer from dropping your connection and reconnect again.

MemberHi there!:
I’m having the same problem as heil_heineken is. I get disconnected from AIM every 1/2 hour or so. I have a Cable connection, which is supposively really fast (it is, most of the time), but I notice that when I’m doing something, on the computer, this error messages comes up and says that my connection failed and that it’s attempting to re-connect, automatically. How do I make it so that my AIM program doesn’t disconnect me from being signed on? My current AIM version is 5.9.3690. Thanks so much in advance.:)

MemberJ0ker, there is no Wireless Network Connection in My Network Connections… it only has Local Area Connection, which is disabled… and Local Area Connection 2, which is what I’m on. I’m not quite sure what I’m supposed to do, maybe I have to go into the routers preferences and change things… I’m not the one who set up the router, so I’m not about to go mess with things yet..but thank you for your advice.
CM_Ang_AIM, I know isn’t that a pain?.. What exactily are you doing on your computer to make it be slow? Maybe you have too many applications running at the same time, that can deffinetly slow down your computer a bit.
*UPDATE* (on my part at least..)
Still no luck with my AIM. It still disconnects me, so what I did, I downloaded Gaim (I had this program on Windows XP before. I had to wipe out my entire computer, damn Service Pack 2 messed it all up) and Gaim works beautifuly. It doesn’t disconnect me. I just thought maybe I would try to find a different 3rd party messenger for AIM… but oh well, I guess I’ll keep Gaim for now. The only reason why I’m making such a big deal out of my AIM being disconnected is because well… it shouldn’t be doing that, and plus I miss the setup of the profile AIM lets you use. As of right now, I’m going to go check out what else I can try to do to make my AIM stop disconnecting me. I’ll update this post later.December 15, 2004 at 7:16 pm #108434Tropical
MemberAre you using a Netgear or Linksys router?

It’s a TOTAL pain in the butt!! I wish that there was a solution to our problem because I’m tired of being disconnected, for no reason, especially since I have a Cable modem and fast Internet speed.

Should I download it, too, since it’s helping you out with your AIM connection problem (am I comprehending this right?)? Thanks in advance.

MemberTropical, I am using a Netgear wireless router. Before I had this one, I had a Linksys one, which was not wireless… that one worked fine. Only with the Netgear one I am having problems with.
CM_Ang_AIM, Gaim is a 3rd party messenger, sort of like Trillian. It lets you log onto multiple screen names from different providers. It will let you log onto Yahoo! ID, MSN, Jabber, IRC, ICQ and AIM. I would deffinetly suggest downloading it. I have no problems with it at all. In my opinion, it’s probably one of the best 3rd party messengers out there.
Here is the link on bigblueball that shows you all sorts of different 3rd party messengers to choose from, Gaim is the 8th one down from the list.
https://bigblueball.com/im/interoperability.asp
I’ve downloaded a bunch of those messengers off of that list, and most of them DO work, accept they are just slow and bulky. I’m not very fond of any of them, I’d say Gaim is the best.
If you want to download Gaim, here is their offical website. It will explain more about the program better than I can.
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/All I can say is that I have much better luck with Gaim then I do with the actual AIM messenger itself.

MemberI think what I am going to do, is to set my Netgear router back to its default factory settings. My dad set it up for all sorts of security protection, and I think maybe that is why it keeps disconnecting me, but I am not entirely sure. I will update this post once I set the router back to its default settings, and we’ll see what happens from there.

Thanks so much for letting me know about Gaim, heil_heineken!:) I truly appreciate your help with this as AIM is totally being a BIG pain in the buttocks!

MemberOK, I haven’t set my router back to its default settings yet, but today I had someone off bigblueball ask me if I had tried opening the ports up in my router that AIM uses so that it would stay connected. The ports are 5190-5193. And the answer is, yes. About two months ago, my father opened up those ports for AIM, and it STILL was disconnecting me. See now this makes me think that even once I do set the router back to its default settings, will that even make a difference? I mean, if AIM only uses those three ports, then I’m thinking that no matter what kind of settings I have on my router it would still disconnect me…I am only guessing though. Please correct me if I’m wrong. What do you guys think?

Yeah, tha’s what I’m thinking, too, heil about AIM only uses those three ports, then about you thinking that no matter what kind of settings you have on your router it would still disconnect you.:( I’m also, still, having problems with staying connecting to AIM and it’s driving me NUTS!!! I want to be able to stay on AIM for as long as I’m signed in, but that’s not happening and it’s upsetting me. I’m starting to think that I should be using Gaim, instead of just AIM, itself. What do you think, heil? Do you think I should uninstall AIM and just use Gaim? I also use Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, and ICQ, as well. Please let me know what you think, thanks in advance.:)January 16, 2005 at 6:40 am #108450Pappy
MemberI’ve been experiencing the problems. Here’s the story:
My roomates and I have a Netgear wireless router. For the past 5 months or so I’ve had no problems. One of my roomates has had the AIM disconnection problems. Up until recently I assumed it was because of the cheap wireless NIC he bought. But a week ago he decided to just run a network cable to the router instead of going wireless since the router was just outside his room. And as soon as he started doing that, I started to get disconnected from aim every so often. In addition to that, now I get large packet loss spikes while playing games at seemingly random intervals. Any help would be appreciated if someone has figured this problem out.
