ParticipantQuote:quote:Fact is, most people don’t leave it at this. They continue… they message you every day asking “whats up”, “what r u doin”, “wanna cybersex??”. How rude it may be, I asked several of these to people to never message me again. They don’t listen. In fact, yesterday someone warned me for that on AIM.I’m not sure who finestgrlinboca is, but she is annoying and obscene, I’ve asked her kindly to leave me alone, but I still get “whats up” and “can I suck ur )*(^?”. So I was forced to block her.

In theory I can use the IRC chat room. To me the IRC chat room is a vision in Neverland. But thanks for the vote of confidence in my computer abilities.
And good luck with your friend, finestgrlinboca, she sounds interesting.

MemberTo reply to some comments …
Rusted, no you were not one of the moderators I tried to contact but I would however introduce myself properly for example “i’m a member at BBB, i’m extremely sorry to have bothered you, etc etc” if that were the case.
Quote:quote:If you have a question you want answered, first post it here in the forums. Then, check our IRC chat… it’s been getting busier all the time and you’ll often find someone there willing to help.On the occasions I DID try to contact someone I had used the search feature to find an answer, browsed through many many forums, and yes even did try the IRC chat. Believe me, contacting a total stranger doesn’t rank high on my ‘things to do’ but it was a simple problem I was having – I was positive it was operator error, something stupid I had done wrong and thought an IM would be a quick fix.
Easy solution – don’t post your IM info. I guess the agreement I gave prior about only having contact capabilities according to ranking is not such a good idea because pointless IM conversations could still exist.
I’m not debating that conversations such as the one’s that DJ posted are pointless and irritating just trying to put my two cents in about the legit reasons some people may try to contact you.

Practically, you can too. Click on the ‘IRC Chat’ link on the mainpage, install the Java applet, enter a nickname et voila. You’re ready to go. 🙂

MemberI agree with all of this… although I dont get IM’s on an avg 5 a day but yes I get them… I think email is the best feature, as no private messaging is gonna be introduced…. I think I also have to remove the IM’s which will be done in few secs from now…. countdown begins

MemberIf anyone has tried to message me I have Ytunnel set to block people who try to message me that are not on my list. My Yahoo Messenger life is just that its not my BBB Forum life. I have only added some Moderators from here to my Yahoo friends list. Please, Members to BBB realize we are here for you on BBB not at your beckin call on the Messengers! Jeff does not even tie us up with IMs! He might message “hey get with me when you can I have something about BBB Id like to talk with you about, I will email you details”.

MemberQuote:quote: Today I have removed every way to contact me from BigBlueBall, except e-mail.Because of insulting, arrogant, rude, demanding, demeaning, obscene and immature messages sent to me I too now can not be contacted by members or non members via IM.
Seriously members… You shot yourselves in the foot. The polite among you can email me and get an IM address…….. the rest need to go back to or stay longer at school. 😉August 5, 2003 at 5:08 pm #58237Jeff Hester
KeymasterI ended up simply changing my privacy settings so that if you’re not already on my contact list, you can’t contact me. Need help? Post a question in the forums. Need to reach me privately? Email me.

MemberI have only gotten IM’s from non-users, I think that the information should only be available to members, and if there is a way, we should tell robots and spiders to go away, if that is possible without making the search site robots and spiders to go away. A lot of the IM’s I have recieved must have been retrieved that way.

No way. They are members here %80 of the time. It’s not the robots that crawl the pages.
I still support the idea top ‘block’ newer members from seeing contact info.

MemberI think this is a very interested topic and I want to give my opinion.
Sometimes it is easy to get confused about who you are talking to and how much knowledge you have about that person.
If you see someone posts often, you follow his/her advice, you see their SN everyday, it is easy to get the impression you share something with that person, that you actualy now them.
I think I only added Jeff to my list, and although I really try not to bother him much, I have to admit I sometimes do, you see I have childish reactions sometimes and Jeff I guess suffered/s that charasteristic of mine, as well as those who live around me.
I don´t know why I never had the impulse of adding anybody but Jeff…but I understand why someone could do that… IMing for help sometimes (guess IM is not the main thing in my life…and I can live even if it does not work perfectly at times, hehe), but what I don´t understand is what would drive you to start talking with someone for no special reason…
So why am I thinking so much about this? Well, the other day, I looked at the birthday´s list and Shifter was in it ( I think it was him/her), I remembered today as I was reading one of the posts and I thought it would be nice to congratulate him/her for it. When I was about sending the e-mail (I should recall if Shifter is male or female but I dont, sorry) I somehow thought it was stupid, cause he/she would not know who I was, and I realized I was right, it was meaningless. Another example is when today I was about asking Rusted where she lived, cause I thought by the things she said it was a nice place. I remembered I could look it up in her profile and so I did. Those two things actually made me think about this topic, and, by chance (I am reading a lot cause I have been busy and couldn´t sign in for a long while) i found this topic…just wanted to share that my conclussion is that is all about how mature and down to earth you are.
I tend to think most of us are, but there are times I even question if I am…
I know it sounds a lot like the truth is out there…lol
