Well I bought this file off of real rhapsody and there files are in the .rax format, and I was wondering if there is anyway to convert that file type to mp3 because .rax isnt useful to me at all. I tried looking on google and nothing came up, so if anyone can help me that would be great. thank you!
June 7, 2004 at 8:39 am #78391DJHyperbyteMemberAs far as I know, RAX files are currently only playable in RealPlayer 10.
June 7, 2004 at 6:08 pm #78393shifterMemberThe RAX format is RealPlayer’s copyright protection format. I believe the only way you can convert them legally is by purchasing RealPlayer Plus which includes the option to encode in mp3 format or burn directly to CD.
(You can always do a line-out to line-in analog rip)

Always remember to research what you are buying. Make sure you can convert your purchased music before you buy it. Otherwise find a different source.

how do I do that?
June 13, 2004 at 2:12 am #78400Blueparrot1966MemberHere’s a question, if anyone knows the answer- can I burn these .rax files to an Audio CD, then rip ’em back on my HD as mp3’s?
That’s so obvious I’m betting I can’t, but I figured I’d ask. I don’t want to rip anyone off, it’s just that my whole music library is mp3, and I want to keep it that way. I don’t want to be screwing around with multiple formats, especially if they’re proprietary.
I’ve got no problem shelling out the dough, I just hate all of the garbage they pull trying to control what I do with it after I buy it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually you don’t even have to go that far. Just set your Recording Control to “What You Hear” and play the song in your music player and hit record in an Audio Editing Program like Goldwave. Save out to wav or mp3 as desired. 🙂
Blueparrot1966 – I doubt that your burning software will be able to convert a .rax to an audio CD, but if it could then yes you could then re-rip to mp3 from CD.

June 14, 2004 at 3:14 am #78401Blueparrot1966MemberI’ve done it now too, with Itunes m4p files. Just convert to audio, then to whatever format you like from there. Since it’s all digital, there shouldn’t be any loss in quality, and if there is, I sure can’t tell.
It’s so obvious, I was sure there’d be a roadblock. And it’s so easy to do, I don’t even see why they’re bothering with secure formats. Again, all I want is to truly OWN the files once I buy them, and not have any restrictions on their format, or how I use them.

Exactly how I feel
July 12, 2004 at 1:17 am #78402vslapeMemberI got sucked into the RealOne thing because I had Real Basic. The RAX format sucks. It can only be changed by burning to a CD in Audio Format. MP3 options does not work. I got 2 song to burn to Audio format, but now the burning program in RealOne won’t put anything on the disk. It goes through all the motions and says the songs are on the CD, but when I try to read what is on the CD, the drives, both the CD Recorder and my other CD Player won’t reconized the disk. Either on CD-RW or CD-R disks.
I will not buy another song from Real again. Try some other source such as musicmatch which downloads to a format you can convert.
The RAX format can only
July 19, 2004 at 11:51 am #78403David KingMemberMaybe you can try Mini-stream Ripper(http://www.mini-stream.com/rm-to-mp3/).
I have used it to convert the music in rmj/rmvb/ra/rm/ram to mp3, and it worked so good and fast.
You can get multiple formats audio files at one time for its powerful multi-channel stream engine.
August 19, 2005 at 2:30 pm #78404bobbievMemberIs there any way that you can play the rax file on your computer and record it on your computer with another program, i.e. Total Recorder?
