A group of friends and I have planned for a while to buy the domain http://www.renegadedesign.com . We even purchased a server and have completed most of the coding and database work. But unfortunatly literally the same day that I was going to purchase the domain, someone registered it that was not in our group. I searched and found that the name Renegade Design had not been copyrighted. So I thought I might copyright the name Renegade Design and maybe register http://www.renegade-design.com or something similar. Would I be in daner of getting into legal trouble if I did this?
I don’ think you can get a copyright on a domain name or company name. Instead, you get a registered trademark or servicemark. As for the domain with the hyphen, I don’t think you could get into any trouble with that at this point, especially since they just registered that other domain.
If I were you, register the domain first (next time). I would also post your question at Sitepoint in their Business and Legal Issues forum. You’re more likely to get a better answer from that forum, because it deals specifically with those kinds of issues.
