I haven’t had any problems with my Yahoo IM since I downloaded it afew months ago. (Version 8 Beta.) In the past week, for some reason, when I log onto my YM within 5 mins it either locks up and visually I can’t see any of my contacts or any of the options from the pulldown menu. Is this a corrupt file in YM v8? Should I uninstall it and re-install it again?
When this happens, I also hit control-alt-delete and it says yahoo messenger isn’t running…
Thanks inadvance.
September 12, 2006 at 9:54 pm #152177imported_Ven0mMemberUninstall it completely, because Yahoo 8 is out of beta, and the final versions are WAY more stable than the beta versions. Then reinstall it with the latest final version:
September 13, 2006 at 12:58 pm #152174DermotParticipantIt may also be a case of skinning software crashing Y! Messenger.
More info can be found at FAQ #11
if not then upgrade to the lastest to see if the problem persists.
September 14, 2006 at 2:17 pm #152179Mac_BlueMemberThanks!
Do I have to uninstall it? Will it make a difference? My husband seems to think (though he’s not an IM’er type of person) that I don’t have to uninstall it, just download the newer version to replace the beta version. And, I won’t lose any contacts if I uninstall it will I??
September 14, 2006 at 4:27 pm #152184imported_ScorpMemberWhile I haven’t gone near version 8 yet, I would be concerned that some remnants of the beta 8 would take over things on the finished 8 and you would still have problems with it. I don’t know for sure.
But did want to say that you shouldn’t lose any of your contacts. From what I understand, they are on the yahoo side and not on your computer.
September 14, 2006 at 5:25 pm #152178imported_Ven0mMemberIt’s always recommended to uninstall a beta version first completely before installing a final version.
You contacts and buddy list are stored server side.
September 14, 2006 at 5:37 pm #152180Mac_BlueMemberThanks alot!
I don’t know why I get freaked about this sort of thing, I know it’s on the server, and I won’t lose my contacts…Blahkk…lol.
So I can either click on the above link or go directly to yahoo.com and download yahoo IM version 8, right?? After I uninstall the beta verison…
(Ok, you all can laugh, I know some about computers, but always double check before doing something just incase!)
September 14, 2006 at 6:06 pm #152175DermotParticipanthi Mac_Blue,
When uninstalling aBeta Version i suggest doing a complete uninstall.
What does that mean you ask?
Well Yahoo!’s official uninstaller does not actually uninstall everything.
It leaves files behind that could possibly cause later issues on newer builds.
After you uninstall the beta, don’t download the new Build just then.
instead reboot your pc then go to the following folder and backup your archives.
C:Program FilesYahoo!MessengerProfiles
This folder will contain folders with your ID’s as folder names.
These folders hold display pics and archives belonging to that id.
You can put the profiles folder on your desktop to back them up.
Then after you do that delete the entire Yahoo! folder found at the following.
C:Program Files at the bottom of the folder.
Delete the Yahoo! folder then reboot again and then install the latest Yahoo! Messenger Build and it should be a successful install.

I’ll do this tonight…I may be back, hopefully with no problems!
September 15, 2006 at 3:29 am #152182Mac_BlueMemberOkay, I downloaded it, got all my settings correct…Only thing now is, my email alerts! The sound isn’t right. I can’t remember the sound.wav file that I need so I can have the same sound alert as before, all I know is the one that is set up now sucks! I thought it was POW, but it isn’t. I think those who use yahoo know that alert sound I’m talking about?? Hopefully? Anyway, if anybody know how I can get that sound working please let me know.
I’ve written Yahoo using the help in my email, so hopefully they’ll get back to me about this.
September 15, 2006 at 4:56 am #152176September 15, 2006 at 3:43 pm #152183Mac_BlueMemberI got it late lastnight. Found a backup of my old drive, and took it from there.
Thanks for your help!
PS I dumped my yahoo backup folder and thought all was okay, but didn’t check the yahoo alert..(blush) before I dumped the folder.
