MemberHello everyone,
First off thanks for your help. My problem is that I recently went out and bought a new computer and installed AIM nearly right away. Everything was running very smoothly until one of my friends tried to im me. The IM caused my AIM to crash. I thought it was just a freak thing but it kept reoccuring. I tried update sound and display drivers and win updates. I change versions to the new beta version offered on AIM’s wesbite. None of that worked. I tried working with the person changing various settings in AIM that did not work either. This person never caused aim to crash on my other computer. I use no Addons or anything like that. anyhelp would be great! Thanks

MemberHi Nick … and welcome to BBB (though I only arrived myself a few days ago!)
I’ve no idea, but I do just wonder, is this YOUR problem, or your FRIEND’s ?
Do you get IMs ok from other friends … and/or … is your friend able to IM OTHER people happily ?June 5, 2005 at 1:26 pm #123446Clobbex
MemberIt would help us if you told which version of AIM you were using.

ParticipantAssuming this is -your- problem and not your friends’ problem, then I’d suggest trying an old version of AIM (5.2.3292 is pretty stable) from http://www.oldversion.com.

MemberHello and thanks for the replies. I do believe this is My problem since on my other computer it works fine. It only crashes with just this one person and it doesnt crash for other people they talk with. I am currently 5.9.3782 which is a beta version of 5.9. The only reason im using a beta version was the normal release of 5.9 did the same thing so ive been playing with different versions. I will try to use an old version and see if that works and will let you know. Thank you!

MemberI’m pretty sure there’s an updated beta version available. Download and install that, and see what happens.

MemberIf it only crashes with that one person, I’m wondering if they’re sending you bunk characters and symbols in the IM, or some very weird html formatting that causes AIM to crash.
What version of AIM is your friend using?
Would you mind installing middle_man and then follow these directions to get rid of the error when you run AIM. Once you’re up and running, go into my aim>middle_man>settings and set the logging directory. Have your friend IM you until you crash, and then grab the html file from the logging directory and email it to me, please- jon8rfc.homeip.net
I can take a peek at the html and if I see anything weird, test it out on myself on a few versions and maybe we’ll get somewhere. If something is found, I’ll send it on over as a bug report for AIM and hopefully they can patch the exploit…if it’s actually an exploit and not a problem with the AIM client your friend is using.

MemberThe html you posted looks ok, so it isn’t that from what I can tell. I’m not familiar with the AOL issue aznballa161 mentioned, so maybe you should look into that.
If I think of or find out anything new, I’ll be sure to post it.
