I’m needing help here. In my computer science class I have the following assignment:
Quote:quote:Create a one page assignment on the software delevopmnt Process (problem, definition, analysis, design, implemention, testing, and maintance). Name a large program or application then fully describe how this process was implemented in its development.Ive decided to choose MSN Messenger. I was woundering if anyone knew of any of the information above.
Thanks in advance.April 15, 2003 at 5:17 pm #63388Jeff HesterKeymasterI don’t know too many specific details behind the development of MSN Messenger. I would definitely search around on http://msdn.microsoft.com
Problem: They wanted a piece of the IM market. ICQ started it, AOL followed with AIM, and Microsoft needed to get into the game.
Definition: Don’t know what they did, but I would define the types of users, and what their needs and wants are. Determine the basic feature set (send instant messages, chat one-on-one or in groups, send and recieve files, voice chat, etc.) and business rules (simple login via Passport, compatibility with existing Hotmail and MSN accounts, etc.).
Analysis: Would this cover market analysis? Competitive analysis? User demographics? Usage scenarios?
Design: This is a strong suite of Microsoft’s. They have specialized GUI designers, icon designers, and do a lot of usability testing.
Implementation: [fill in all the nitty gritty technical details here. Refer to the MSDN site.
Testing: Typically they do alpha testing internally, and beta testing they open to users. Now they even have a special site for beta testers where users can apply and they can collect feedback.
Maintenance: They add new features over time to remain competitive, fix bugs that are discovered, and support new operating systems (like XP). They collect bugs through their http://messenger.msn.com site, and they monitor the newsgroups. Patches are applied through the Windows Update feature.
Another tool that’s related, and which you might find more information for is a sort of extension to Messenger by a small team of developers: http://www.threedegrees.com
There’s an article in Newsweek that describes how the product came about and it might give you a lot of the information you need.
