yea, now i looked around on here for this question of mine to be answered, and im sure its here, cause i can recall it being asked, but since my search turned up unsuccessful, here it goes, dont laugh…LOL..
we have covered ip addresses and all extensively, with only a few concrete answers…
So question is:
when chatting on AIM, it is or isnt possible for the person with whom ur chatting to access ur ip address?, if so how is this done, and what can they do with it, get ur buddylist? from what i understand, when anIM is typed it goes thru the AIM server then to the recipient correct? so what can someone with whom ur chatting get from you? and can someone explain how to see the ip of the person with whom ur chatting?
can people really hack ur comp up good just by having ur IP, what else would they need?

when chatting on AIM, as far as I know, it’s only possible to get someone’s IP if you’re directly connected with them. If you’re going through the AIM servers, as during any normal conversation, it’s not possible for them to get your IP. If you directly connect, then they can get your IP. I don’t know the exact method, but I imagine it has something to do with tracing the connections to their computer, since you’re bypassing the AIM network.
And having someone’s IP doesn’t mean anything. I’m not a hacker by any means, so maybe I’m wrong, but just about every discussion I’ve seen comes out the same: IP addresses are worthless. It’s more or less the analogy of: just because you know my street address doesn’t mean you can get into my safe.
If you’re curious, there’s LOTS of posts on IP addresses here on the forums, and most of them are asking the same thing as you. Many of them are in the AIM forum, some like this one are in the security/privacy forum. Unfortunately, the forum search function disregards ‘ip’ because it’s less than three characters.
I’m just curious though — why is this suddenly such a hot topic? Just in the last few weeks there’s been at least four new topics on getting, tracing, and using IP addresses, but none of them have provided a satisfactory reason as to why it’s so crucial.
April 3, 2007 at 4:02 pm #159953Slickrick77Memberto make it short and sweet but honest, its an ex- girlfriend, she always wanted to know who was on my AIM buddylist and i never told her cause i thought it was kinda invading my privacy, so i was convinced since she was so adamant about it, i figured she must have found a way to get it from me thru my ip, cause in the past i have had DIRECT CONNECTION message exchanges with her, and maybe she’ not as smart as im thinking, but looking back, i wonder what if she was and somehow has access to all my computer info, there’s my reasons for the ip quests.

Why don’t you start a World of Warcraft thread in Off-Topic? Who knows, I might even join…:p

April 4, 2007 at 7:00 am #159948TigerbladeParticipantslickrick77 — I read through that thread you linked, and I see no evidence of any sort of actual hacking. The original author is trying to get back at a guy who scammed him by not sending him whatever product he purchased. Nowhere does it seem that he ever succeeded in doing anything at all.
I’ll say it for the record, one last time: Your IP is practically worthless. Even if they get your IP (through AIM, MSN, email, or you giving it to them), it’s not worth much. Even if they do feel like taking the time and effort to “hack you,” you’re probably perfectly safe as long as you have some sort of protection enabled — a firewall on your modem/router, a software firewall, whatever.
Relax, kick your feet up, and don’t worry about it.
