I have windows xp home edition sp2 . The other day after rebooting my computer windows wouldn’t load my desktop. Not even in safe mode. I tried everything Possible to get it to start again but nothing worked.
My OS came with my computer. Can anyone tell me what I should do to be able to get to my desktop and find out what could be causing the problem?
I have NIS2005 and everything windows , norton , all my hardware & software is up to date. I am not sure where to turn from here.
I have done some searching with google and it kinda looks like I should make a bootable disk my other problem is my new computer did not come with a floppy drive.
Any suggestions on how to fix this and keep it from happening again?
August 16, 2005 at 1:46 am #127585Jeff HesterKeymasterwhat do you mean your desktop disapeared? can you not see your desktop icons? can you not see the desktop wallpaper? does it say “Active Desktop Recovery” in large orange letters? can you right click on the desktop and get a menu? what do you mean by rebooting? did you reinstall windows? did you just restart the computer? we need more details!
also, what’s up with new computers and not having floppy drives? UGH, it pisses me off! bring back the FLOPPY!
the only thing i can think of is the Desktop.htt file being corrupt. this file is usually located: %appdata%MicrosoftInternet ExplorerDesktop.htt (where %appdata% is replaced by Windows with C:Documents and Settingsyour usernameApplication Data). a quick fix for this would be to delete this file. you will need to be able to view hidden/system files before you go and search for it.

I don’t know if that is the tech term for it but that is how I have always thought of it. As far as the desktop disappeared, I’ll try to be more clear. I shut down the computer , turned it back on and I see the users, I click on the user and the desktop never loads , no there isn’t any big letters no orange letters, it did not say active desktop because I would have pressed that button and all would have came back . I mean the desktop isn’t there, it doesn’t load nothing.
So I pressed f8 , went into safe mode, thinking that something else might have been causing the error but nope again the same thing . When I shut the computer down after I log onto the user it stops dead in its tracks and nothing happens.
I cannot right click on the desktop because it isn’t there. NOthing is there, no icons no pictures no error NOTHING. Strangest thing.
No, I did not reinstall windows. I wanted to make sure there was nothing else I can/ could do before I lost everything and reformatted.
Is there a way when your computer misbehaves like this to make a boot cd? Can that be done? Again, the new computer came with no floopy drive ( yes, I know I can buy an external one but as of yet I haven’t ) so how can I create a boot disc if that is what it is called from the cd drive or on a cd? I hope I am explaining this the right way.
Thanks for trying to help.

August 17, 2005 at 2:39 am #127586Jeff HesterKeymastersorry about the rebooting harshness (i read your post incorrectly). you can try a Repair install of Windows XP if you have a installation CD. although i have never heard of this happening before (desktop disapearing). are you sure you do not have a virus of any kind? this is very strange. you shouldn’t have to buy an external floppy drive (these days CDs/USB flash drives are bootable).
August 17, 2005 at 3:41 am #127592SpikeMemberIt’s a possibility that a piece of spyware has put an HTML page (blank) over your desktop. Try this:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Desktop (tab) > Customize Desktop > Web (tab) > Make Sure that there are no items there except My Persoanl Page or something like that (there should only be one.) Hit OK as many times as necessary and see if it worked.
