My girlfriend has recently had some odd activity with her headphone jack. We use Yahoo Messenger and Skype to talk on the headsets and lately, I can her her perfectly, but she can’t hear me talk. We both did tests on our headsets and both mics work when we aren’t talking to each other, and so do the headphones. Sometimes though, even her headphones give out and this is a brand new headset she’s using currently. I guess she’ll need to get her headphone jack repaired? Is this a common thing to stop working? I’m just wondering if there’s anything we can do to avoid additional costs of getting it repaired. Thanks
P.S. Would a system restore help this at all?
Check the volume? I’ve never heard of a Headphone jack just dying… Check to make sure all the volume controls are up and not muted.
Well, it started to work again when she moved it a certain way but now it doesn’t work again and to be honest, I forgot the name of this website until a recent Favorites cleaning….D’oh! Anyway, the basics that I know is that she’s living in NM short term and she said it’s really dirty there. She has a few cats and sometimes when we headset the cats go and run past it and they pull the cord out. She can hear with her speakers, but she can’t use a headset at all. Not for listening or speaking. She still thinks the headphone jack went out and I don’t know much of anything about computers so I don’t recommend anything that I don’t read and research first. It’s very annoying since I’m in WV right now and it’s cheaper to talk on the headsets than use the phone. I just don’t know how to fix it…we’ve tried just about everything we can think of doing. Any other ideas? It’s the strangest thing…
Sounds like the jacks’ broken. Depending on what kind of computer it is (Custom or store-bought?) you’ll need to get a new computer case, because they don’t just sell new jacks like that to my knowledge (I could be wrong, though).
Or you could not waste your money and use the identical jacks on the back of your computer… 98% of computers that have a green and pink jack in front also have them in back.
Yea, she has a Dell if that helps any…she has to move her entire desk to check the back (but she won’t because she’s stubborn but we won’t get into that lol) and so my next question is…how much would a new computer case be and where would I get one? Thanks for the help so far
Well if it worked when she moved it, I would first open the case and check the wires from the headphone jack to the mother board. Even more, try changing the headphones?
You said it was a Dell, and I’m pretty sure you can’t buy OEM Dell Cases, but you could try eBay? I think getting a new case would be hit or miss, it could be the actually headphone jack that is out OR it could be the motherboard, and if you got a new case, and moved everything over and BAM it was the motherboard, all that work for nothing.
Go ahead and try wiggling the wires, clean the contacts a little or something. Like Spike said, go cheap and just plug them in the back! Or you could buy speakers to replace the current ones you have and just be sure to get a pair with a headphone jack on the control or one of the speakers.
No, I’m like 95% sure it’s the jack itself purely because she said it worked when you wiggled it, which (if you know how a headphone jack works), it wouldn’t be the connectors, but the jack itself instead.
Your computer is Dell. You really can’t buy a new Dell case just like that, and swapping it out is roughly a 2 hour job, depending on who does it. I would recommend using the jacks in the back of the computer which do the exact same thing (just move the damn thing!), or warranty it with Dell if it’s still under warranty.
