ParticipantSince mess.be told the world that 6.2 was going to be released, I already had seen that all hell was gunna to break loose.
Firstly, they reported that the MSN internal site for Messenger (messenger.msn-int.com) started generating information about its next release of its world wide favorite Messenger client. Now with updates like 6.0, and not so much 6.1, who would blame people for expecting some “cool stuff”?
Dwergs told us all to expect to see animated display pictures everyone wanted from day one. Of course everyone jumped the bandwagon, and was excited, without a doubt. As unfortunate as it was, he later said it was a misunderstanding, and deluxe display pictures were not going to be included. Now, I do know that the word got around to all the popular Messenger sites, but it just seems that everyone ignored it. And now everyone is bitching at MSN for “lying”, “selling false information” etc, about not getting anything “good” in the long await for the new version.
Next I see people whining about nothing being added, or not enough things being new for you to bother your time to download it. HELLO… who said you had to anyway? I know I’ve always been told “if it ain’t broke.. don’t fix it”.
This release was not meant to be big anyways. Please be aware that the numbers DO represent something. Major.Minor.Revision. Get the point?
Now of course no one’s looking down looking you for being disappointed. I’m sure millions were. But come on.. really. I’m positive MSN didn’t include the animated display picture feature just because people wanted it.. I’m sure they are still working on it. Who knows.. maybe a version 6.3 will come as soon as 6.1 did..Now as for features that we expected coming from mess.be, they are as followed:
- Launch Site getting a new name: Fun & Games
- Additions to Fun & Games: Music Exchange (which btw I have not seen added yet)
- Mozaki Blocks added to Fun & Games (which was added a few days ago; before the release of 6.2)
- MSN Messenger ‘Connection Troubleshooter’
- Games from-within a internet page with JavaScript (anyone see it?)
What we have seemed to get:
- Allows you to install the MSN ToolBar for IE
- Display mobile contacts in a group, and also noticeably changed to a gold MSN character
- Autocomplete emoticons, which apparently can not be turned off
- 3 new launch-sites you have to PAY for
- 2 new API’s
Also, two things I have noticed my self:
A bug? When typing an emoticon, if it contains characters that an original MSN Messenger emoticon contains, it will be over looked, and the original will only be displayed. For example: if you have a custom emoticon which you have programmed as: “:@@:” you will end up getting “:@ (original emoticon) {followed by} @:”. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.Another is: a Status History folder.
What this seems to do is log every time your contact changes his or her nickname, status, and when they signed in and out. Another page out of Messenger Plus!’s book?Overall, for a minor upgrade I feel it a total worth while for the point I believe it was released for. And that’s trouble shooting, and fixing major problems people were having with signing in. (So far, so good)
If you have any initial comments about 6.2, feel free to post them in Jeff’s thread located here. And of course any comments about this topic can be made here.Below are useful links regaurding the release of Messenger 6.2.0133

MemberI’ll just add my $0.02 worth — Microsoft never promoted MSN Messenger 6.2 officially or touted any big new features. They can’t be accused of lying, since they never announced anything. The msn-int.com site is run by Microsoft (in spite of what some MS customer service reps might say in a chat), but it is not their official channel for announcing anything. It’s not intended for public consumption, even if it is publically accessible.
As for Deluxe Display Pictures, I think there is more to the story than what mess.be has described. It doesn’t make sense that the English language version of the online help for Messenger specifically mentions Deluxe Display Pictures if they hadn’t at least at one time considered putting that feature in. I suspect that it was dropped from the 6.2 release, but may show up in a future version.
It would be interesting to hear the real story behind them.

It’s possible the original set back date to the 22nd was a probable case that this feature was not fully programmed yet.

Memberi agree.. you take what is free, dont like it dont use it..
although it was a sort of disapointing upgrade microsoft wants to make money over it, with their pay for games and such. I will not argue such as the terrabytes it must take to run the MSN Server’s
as for the new API.. maybe patchou could find good use of it in Messenger Plus! 3.1 (as 3.0 is near finished) the new API might help fix a couple of bugs patchou described as “limited”..
not for the gold icons.. I am not a fan of the gold icons.. I personally think they are annoying.. but I like the idea on how I can group them..
and for the autocomplete.. i’m sure patchou will find a way of letting you turn it off.. but it doesn’t really bug me.. in fact I think it goes good with the Quick Icons Panel.. because as you click the icon. you get the emotion in your messenger window..
7.0 should be coming out in 2-3 months or maybe less and the features in it should be phonominal.. Microsoft must keep up a reputation to stay on top of the Instant Messenger race, ICQ 4.0 recently came out. and that is good enough reason to start getting a little more serious..
the next year or so in instant messeging could get interesting.. lets just hope it doesn’t end like Internet Explorer did.. but there is always a chance…

EDIT: heres my mirror.. as messenger has taken it down

Think of it as a fix for connection problems, with some additional features. If this intrests you, go for it.. but if it does not.. well, I’m sure you know the answer.

Keymasterdetn8r, I *think* he’s saying that the only noticeable change are the pay-to-play games. Frankly, I wouldn’t recommend rushing to download 6.2 either.
April 24, 2004 at 5:51 pm #46348detn8r
ParticipantSo he’s telling the world not to download it because you have to pay for two games? Paaahlease. AIM comes packed with spyware, and this new ICQ comes packed with adverts. and everyone’s bitching because MSN included TWO freakin games ya have to pay for?! Come on…….
This release wasn’t ment to be huge in anyway… I don’t understand why everyone thinks that just because there’s a new release… “ooh… there has to be something good”.
As I said above… if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Meaning, if you wern’t one of the people who were having connection problems blah blah.. then don’t touch the links. If you DO think that having SOME little features is nice, or just a geek who likes to have the newest of everything… then go for it. SIMPLE.

MemberIf I downloaded MSN 6.2, would there still be errors that won’t let me sign in? or will it mess up my IE anymore? Im sorta thinking about downgrading to 6.0 if there isnt a better solution :s
April 25, 2004 at 1:24 am #46347detn8r
ParticipantThe problem will only fix it self if you let it. Give it a try, and if it works, cool. If it doesn’t, then you always have 6.0 to turn to.

MemberThey took off ‘make a phone call’ that I used quite often so I had to go back to 6.1! Are there any other features they removed in this new version?
