My 1.5 year old laptop has gotten into the habit of shutting off randomly. It would run fine, then whir and buzz for dear life and some random point in time, then shut off. This baffled me until I brought up the task manager when it began to get loud. dfrgNTFS.exe was running and taking up a *large* percentage of my CPU usage. Like, 70+. I killed it, and it stopped shutting off. This is working, but it will only work when I’m at the computer to kill it. I *think* this program has to run, but whever it gets out of hand it shuts off my computer. I’ve been shutting it off whenever it gets out of hand and have had no problems with my computer. Is there anyway to curb dfrgNTFS without me being there so I can leave my laptop on when I’m not at it? What exactly is the function of this program anyway?
Sorry for the hella long post, and thanks 🙂
Yeah if you have Diskeeper, I think the problem is that the “Set it and forget it” function on Diskeeper is set to run. I found that while this is running it takes up quite a lot of CPU usage. Basically, the dfrgNTFS means that it is defragmenting your NTFS formatted hard disk. A way to stop this would be to go into Diskeeper, and un-schedule the “Set it and forget it” function.
