Indeed. I’ll just stick with my DynaTac 8000x for now.
Kinda bulky, but meh.

I had a Samsung Blackjack that I loved, and this blows it out of the water completely. There isn’t any sarcasm there, it’d be worth it, the phone itself really is better than anything else on the market (even for a business-class user, imo).
I hated Apple two weeks ago, I’m thinking about an iMac now.

So I take it you got an iPhone? What do you love about it?

As I said, i came off a Samsung Blackjack, which is a 3g/HSDPA phone, with a 2mp camera (or close to), a qwerty keyboard, and Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone.
- Mobile IE v. Safari – no competition, there isn’t any reason one would EVER want use Mobile IE after using Safari, its fast and intuitive, I use it every day and it works 99% of the time, where Mobile IE would fail on many common sites.
- WMP v. iTunes – There was a heavy clicking sound when the audio was switched on/off on the Blackjack, the iPhone seamlessly integrates the iPod with the phone, I just plug in the headset/headphones and tap the button to resume where I was a few hours ago.
- Wifi and EDGE – the speed at which the iPhone associates and authenticates with Wifi is amazing, I would never have expected to switch off EDGE so quickly. EDGE itself isn’t that slow, it’s perfectly usable for getting information while in the car.
- HTML Email. This is provided in the WM6 upgrade, but the document viewers and rendering are perfect, I check my mail on my phone more than a desktop now.
- Amazing GUI – every other phone can do what the iPhone does, but not nearly as easily, everything is just a tap away, vs being several menu’s deep. it’s so quick to check the weather, my SMS’s, missed calls and emails in seconds, nothing beats that power.
- Third party apps – AppTapp provides some early applications for the iPhone, anything I would have wanted has already been completed, any OSX developer can build apps for the ARM CPU and deploy them onto the phone.
- Fast network – although the iPhone isn’t 3g, it does connect to the AT&T network faster than any other phone I’ve owned, the phone is usable 15 seconds afrer a cold boot.
I would consider myself someone that a) likes Microsoft, a lot and b) is generally hard to impress, but this phone is the best thing around, and I feel is fully suited for business-class users as well as those that want to be connected all the time.
September 20, 2007 at 5:02 am #163947Jeff HesterKeymasterDavid, that’s an amazing endorsement of the iPhone. I’ve wanted one for a while, and now I really want one.
One thing that concerns me is typing using the onscreen keyboard rather than tactile keys. How have you found it? What’s the longest bit of text you typically type on it, practically-speaking?
Which of the IM apps have you tried?:
Any decent IRC, SSH or VNC clients?
September 20, 2007 at 2:54 pm #163955DavidParticipantI’ve done quite a bit of typing with the software keyboard, I’m getting fast now, it works just as well as the Blackjack did (although people seem to complain that the Bjack keyboard is cramped), but I’ve returned email and searched the web, as well as had class-long IRC chat sessions with it. I am a fan of hardware solutions, but this does get the job done, it is certainly not a drawback for the phone, but I would also not say it is an advantage.
I’ve used Meebo, it isn’t the most stable thing, Safari has crashed a few times while in use. That is the only web-based client I’ve used (since I don’t want that). ApolloIM is okay, it works, but has been unstable. Mobilechat is really coming along, it is much like iChat, I like how it handles everything.
Colloquy, an IRC client, is still at v0.1, and works pretty well, it’s a somewhat awkward interface (I never know if I’m on the damn server or not), but it is functional.
Someone has ported over VNSea, which is based off of “Chicken of the VNC,” an OSX VNC server, so I’m unable to test it, I assume it is only a matter of time before Ultra/Tight/RealVNC gets ported or added.
The openSSH package is on Installer.app, so you can just install a terminal and then open it up and execute “ssh” as you normally would. Unfortunately, the keyboard in the terminal is not optimized for that type of input, but I think that too is just a matter of time. I believe Shape+ has made something that allows RDP through a webpage, but I have not tried it.
I think that soon development documents are going to be released and there will be a burst of development, since right now, entry is tough. This phone is only going to get better, and you can still get 4gb’s for $300 or refurb 8gb’s for $350. It’s as cheap as any other phone, and it really does offer more.
September 20, 2007 at 5:50 pm #163968imported_Ven0mMemberThere is a 3G version of the iPhone coming out next year according to this article.
September 20, 2007 at 6:32 pm #163948Jeff HesterKeymasterThanks for the reply, Dave. I looked up the link for Mobile Chat, and also found a site with a pretty complete list of native apps for the iPhone. Hopefully this will come in hand very soon. 😉
Ven0m, I probably won’t wait for the 3G version. I’m content with the combination of EDGE plus WiFi access (and I’m not that patient).
September 20, 2007 at 6:53 pm #163969imported_Ven0mMemberNeither would I actually. I’m considering getting an iPhone too soon. 😛 Until then, I’m quite happy with the 160GB iPod Classic.
September 20, 2007 at 7:36 pm #163949Jeff HesterKeymasterI have a 1 GB iPod Shuffle that is perfect for my workouts. I’m interested in the iPod capabilities, but I’m even more interested in the iPhone’s other abilities.
September 20, 2007 at 10:01 pm #163970imported_Ven0mMemberI’d need one of at least 100GB to carry all of my music. 😛 I just wish the iPod Touch didn’t use expensive flash memory. Oh well. 😛

I go running with my iPhone, it’s great, clicking the mic on the headset/phones to change the song is awesome.
October 8, 2007 at 5:10 pm #163971AilindahParticipantAs has been said, its like any other technological toy out there. Yeah dropping the price that much was a bit slimey, but meh, lots of other companies do worse things every day, except there product isn’t zomgWTFbbqPWNu popular. I have a basic cell phone that I use, let’s me make phone calls and basic text messages, hell it isn’t even a camera phone, and it works fine for me. You want the latest and greatest you wind up paying for it. Personally I am not a big fan of the new cell phones coming out anyway, just more items to have to figure out and make sure you use enough to justify the cost of the phone and the service that comes with it. As far as most features of a cell phone go, meh, that is what I have a computer for.
But on topic, no I don’t think Apple’s move was all that unfair at all. Things like this happen all the time as I said before, just not with as popular of an item as the Iphone is.
