I thought for months I’d had a problem with my integrated sound card (Realtek A97). At times I’d lose ALL sound on my laptop. A reboot corrects the problems but it’s mighty annoying. I have WLM running all the time. It happens in the middle of conversations, when I’m using WLM or YH, or even just listening to music in WMP – but WLM is always on when it happens. I have updated my drivers to the most recent ones on the sound card with no success in eradicating the problem. It may happen multiple times in one day or go weeks without happening.
Today I had WLM running on my PC at work. I rec’d a nudge from someone, and then noticed when I was doing other tasks I was not hearing the msg rec’d noise when the taskbar would flash. Later I discovered I had no sound anywhere on the PC either. I had NEVER had this problem occur on the PC before. Once again, a reboot fixed the problem. I run no other messengers on the PC.
The only commonality was WLM. Now I’m thinking it has something to do with WLM and not my sound card. I have been using the latest build (beta or public release) as soon as it’s available. This has been happening for approx 7 or 8 months now. I’m beginning to think it might be a conflict of some sort caused by WLM. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so – is there a fix besides a reboot? Could some old registry entry from a previous build of WLM or MSN messenger be causing this to happen? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Have you tried disabling WLM and seeing whether the sound problem persists? In this way, you can pinpoint whether WLM is the culprit or merely an innocent bystander. Test this with your laptop at least for an hour or two.
There is also a possibility that your integrated sound card could be failing (and sound cards are prone to failure, just like other computer hardware) Notice I said “failing” i.e. your sound card problems could be temporarily solved with a reboot, only to emerge again thereafter.
