MemberAlana, are you using a firewall such as zone alarm? That was my problem. As far as why Zone Alarm suddently started acting this way I don’t know but as soon as I shut it down AIM stopped disconnecting. So if you are using a firewall, try disabling it just to see if that’s what it is.

KeymasterAre you losing your Internet connection? Some routers will come configured by default to drop the connection after a period of perceived inactivity, and then automatically reconnect when it detects a network request. Because it’s a broadband connection (I’m assuming, since you’re using a router), the reconnection is virtually transparent and instantaneous.
You can check the router configuration and tell it to keep the connection alive all the time, and that might solve your problem. Let us know either way.

MemberI have been having similar problems since starting to use a wireless router. Sometimes AIM on my comp looks like it is logged on when in reality it is not. Either I don’t show up as being online at all, or it is constantly signing off about ever 5-10 minutes or so. And it lags a lot when it does work.
What setting(s) should I try adjusting on the router?

Participantscooby – i had the same problem with the latest version of aim. i find that aim version 5.1.3036 works best. it doesnt kick you off AS much and doesnt do that thing where it looks like you’re signed on but you’re really signed off.

KeymasterWhat kind of router do you have? Give me the brand and model and I might be able to help. The user manual would probably have the answer as well (if there is one).

Participantjeff are you out there? can you help me with the information i provided???

KeymasterThat’s not quite enough info for me to give specific info. For that I’d need the model number. But fortunately most Linksys routers are configured pretty much the same way.
There is a web-based admin console for their routers. You get to it by pointing your browser to http://192.168.1.1/
You’ll be prompted to enter a user name and password. Unless you’ve changed the default password (which is a wise thing to do, assuming you ARE the administrator), leave the user name blank and use “admin” as the password. This should present you with the router’s basic settings screen.
You want to make sure the box labeled “Keep Alive” has a check mark in it, then Apply the settings.
If the “Keep Alive” option was already checked, then your router was properly configured and the problem may lie with your Internet Service Provider (in which case I suggest you contact their tech support).
For more details on your router configuration, you can download the user manuals in PDF format from http://www.linksys.com/support/default.asp
Hope this helps! 🙂
