So for some reason, i have people saying that they cannot see my profile pix, in the bottom right area slated for your avatar / profile pix.
this only happens when i use my YIM from work. at home and other places, it works fine.
i am running the YIM 7,0,0, 437 version on both.
no firewall at work. i mean, i can use AIM fine at work, no problem, no proxies, it’s set on ‘firewall with no proxies’.
i mean, if i can chat, why won’t my profile pix work?
any ideas? it’s no big deal, i just wanted to see if this is an isolated case and if there is a solution or not.

since I connect to Y!M using “firewall with no proxies”.Is it the same computer you have at work and at home? If you use a diferent computer, even with the same picture yahoo will see it as there a change because it has your pic sent to your friends under a new code name. Y!m resizes and converts your pic into a png file, yahoo server gives the png file a code name and informs all online friends that your icon is now changed, at your friend side Y!m checks and see if the file exists, if it’s a new file yahoo will try to send it from yahoo file transfer server and this server is very busy during some periods of the day.
I’m using same notebook at home and at work, at work I can change my pic but at home most of the times I can’t get my pic changed.

The type of connection doesn’t make a difference. The problem is you use a different computer and even you select the same pic as the one you do from your home computer, yahoo will see it as you change to a new pic. Check the setting in Preferences, Display Image. It takes some times before your friends can see the your pic depending on how busy yahoo file transfer server is when you select a new pic to display.

There’s a difference between turning on “share my picture” from the IM window and from Preferences. If you check “share my picture” from the IM window it’s valid only for the current session, next time you sign in Y!m goes back to the setting in Preferences. Make sure you set it on in Preferences. If your friends still don’t get your pic in the corner of IM window, I’m pretty sure yahoo file transfer server is too busy. Changing between “share my picture” and “don’t share a display image” has immediate effect, if somehow yahoo understands that you change the pic, your Y!m sends the png file to yahoo file transfer server and the server sends to ALL YOUR ONLINE FRIENDS and this is where the process may get stuck. In case yahoo server is too busy, because it’s the file transfer server, it sends back to you a packet with something like “HTTP/1.1 999 Unable to process request at this time — error 999rn”. There’s no popup, you can see it if you run a packet sniffer.

2. Kinda weird. I guess the file transfer server has been too busy for about 14 months now. And this is also with different versions of YIM, b/c i have updated about 3 times up to the current (V. 7,0,0, 437).
My only guess is that my work firewall is somehow blocking that ‘ftp’ server you speak of. however, why am i able to chat then? i guess it possible that the firewall blocks and ftp’ed file, therefore not allowing the pix/avatar to upload.
IM traffic doesn’t go through the same server as file transfer. An overloaded proxy on the path may also be the problem. I tried to change my pic on different ISP networks, one of them gave trouble, what I found is the png file sent to yahoo server is broken down into several packets and my Y!m gets an ACK for every 2 or 3 sent packets so I assume the proxy introduces some packet loss.
ok. dunno if this helps. but my friends can see my personal avatar. they can see me turn it off and on. when i select an actual pic [share my picture] that has been uploaded and they say it just goes blank.

The first time you select your avatar, all files of the avatar are sent to you and your friends from Yahoo Avatar site and stored in Program FilesYahoo!MessengerCacheAvatars. If the cache is subsequently cleared, Y!m retrieves your avatar from Yahoo site. The difference between pic and avatar is your pic in png format is generated and sent to your friends via Yahoo server while the avatar is composed and sent to all parties from the Avatar site.
