MemberI know for awhile there was this glitch with yahoo profile pics, where it wouldn’t upload, and you had to rename the picture. Have you tried that? Or even the pictures of the ball, or dog or cat won’t display??? It sounds more like its a setting somewhere or a port block, but it’s worth a try. Also make sure you are not running anything that has turned OFF your ability to P2P.

Memberthis is exactly whats happening on my comp…this person doesnt give any solution to repairing it…at the end he says “scan to be sure”, wtf does that mean????
if you get an error…..” yahoo messenger beta cannot convert the picture you have selected to use as your display image. try another picture. if this problem persists, check to make sure you have enough space on your hard drive” it maybe because you are trying to access a picture off your RECENT files list, and the file has moved. OR MAY BE because you are infected….. I duplicated a recent error reported by trying to load a pic from my RECENT list…. http://www.nhyrvana.com/ru-infected.jpg but several folks are reporting the error with unmoved pics.. and finding a strange file format at the end…. usually .vbs……scan to be sure please.

They mean to scan your computer to make sure you don’t have any viruses or any type of malicious stuff on it. Run your anti-virus program and if you have programs like spybot search & destroy or adaware SE personal, you should run them one by one. So go ahead and try that and to see if everything is clean.May 30, 2005 at 11:22 am #121866aneagle
ParticipantI looked into this problem because I wanted to show some new pics to my friends and they did not see the change when I change to a new pic. It works fine during some periods of the day and there’s a likely repeating pattern.
I ran a test by adding my own ID to the buddy list so I can IM to myself and catch the in and out packets between my computer to Yahoo server. The blank square means there’s no picture from the sender previously stored in program filesYahoo!messengercacheicon and Yahoo server is not able to process the transmission of the pic. I found the message from Yahoo saying it’s “not able to process at this time” in one of the packet but this message does not popup on my screen.
The whole procedure is when an IM session is started, Yahoo server sends a 10 digit code to tell you what’s the pic the other person wants to have it displayed on your screen, your Yahoo messenger search the “cache” folder for that pic. If it’s not there Yahoo messenger tells the server to retreive and transmit. Yahoo messenger display the latest pic from the “cache” folder until the new pic is received, the square remains blank if there’s no pic at all from the other person in the cache. The cache may be empty after you reinstall Yahoo messenger. This is not a p2p exchange because the problem is there while I am in p2p mode and the p2p mode is verified by super Webcam.

ParticipantThis is not an infected picture its just a format that cannot be changed by their script…like say .png can’t be changed by their servers to say .gif ….if you try a unformated pic or a corrupted unfinished pic to your display pic you will get that error.
Display pics are sent to the yahoo server so they are checked first and will respond with that error if there is problems with the server picture format conversion….there is no “infection”
Use something simple like mspaint to change the pics format then try it…it should work fine then.

ParticipantThe pic is resized and converted to png format locally and saved in program filesyahoo!messengerprofiles[user ID]my icons, the original pic is not transmitted to Yahoo server.

ParticipantSorry, I forgot the conclusion, all I wanted to say is the problem is due to busy period of the server, some are busy and some are not but we don’t know beforehand which one Y!m is connected to. I also tried to switch to a different ISP and it works better, so it could be packet losses.

MemberPotzo….i was looking in the wrong place to find & fix the problem and aneagle’s comment triggered an idea on where to go and i was able to get it working…on my comp, pics that others post as their display images are stored in C:Program FilesYahoo!MessengercacheIcon and theyre saved as .png files, but my pics i was trying to post didnt show up there and i thought they weren’t posting correctly, etc. but theyre stored in C:Program FilesYahoo!MessengerProfiles*username* and by c&ping a pic off my desktop into that folder, poof it started to work……i had been ocassionally deleting my profiles folders and i guess thats something you dont want to do cause its working for me now

MemberHey,
I am having a serious picture display problem ( and avatar too). All of sudden I can’t change my picture, and when I do, it’s white space…. I deleted all the pics in my pictures there, and same. I reinstalled yahoo 3 times, cleaned the dir manualy, nothing. Also when I select a picture, it completly fills the banner size of “Show display picture” there, and after selecting, the Don’t Display Picture button is checked instead of Show Picture. It’s really weird, and in some circumstances friends report seeing my display picture ( the last one that worked before it all started), even tho I still see the white space. I’m completly clueless, and I wouldn’t like to do a windows install just for this you know 🙂 Any helping tips ? Any ideas…
I added one pic here maybe it helps.

Thanks,

MemberOliverDK I think I have the same problem as you. Geting desperate here 🙂 Dunno what else to try… did all kinds of stuff, and ended up in vain…
EDIT: cache dir is not created , maybe this is the problem. and I tried with 7.0 also…. so it’s not the beta
