Hi,
Alright I’ve done everything I think but my display pictures and backgrounds are all missing andwhen I try add new ones I get this message:
Your display pictures cannot be used. Please create new ones.
When I add a new picture, it doesnt appear on the message window where it should. I see everyone elses and yes the box is checked off to display my picture. I have also deleted everything and reinstalled, and I also have tried other versions and adding MSN Plus.
When I select a display picture it appears for like 1/2 a sec and then disappears. Anyone have any idea what to do??
October 30, 2005 at 11:50 pm #85020YakultMemberI’ve got this exact same problem! I’ve search the entire internet (or so it seems) for an answer to this problem and nothing helps! I’ve removed all my firewall software and I have no MSN add-ons. I used to be able to get display pictures, but now whatever I do, I can’t get them to display… It’s exactly the same problem as DDevil. I even emailed Microsoft and they were about as much use as a chocolate tea-pot… Please please help meee! It may sound like a silly thing to get wound up about, but it’s driving me crazy! x

Hi guys and girls:
I updated to WLM v8.0.0689 beta a few weeks ago, and everything was smooth sailing. Then for the past few days, I noticed that I couldn’t see my contacts’ display pictures. It was just the blue Messenger icon. IMed my contacts and they could see my display picture.I did put a check next to Show display pictures from others in Options > General, but to no avail. Tried the usual repair and uninstall, but no dice. I suspect that a file related to the display pics has been corrupted in my C: drive. 🙁 I’ve tried searching the net but no one seems to know of a solution.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Philip
June 12, 2006 at 2:01 pm #85019princeGParticipantTry this:
Go to Start, click Run, and type %appdata%MicrosoftIn the folder that opens, delete the one called MSN Messenger.
If your storage data for MSN Messenger is corrupted, you will need to delete the files so it can start over a fresh and then you wont expirience this problem Doing so though will result in the loss of all custom backgrounds, emoticons etc. you have for MSN Messenger, but it iwill most likelt fix the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it out, but still have the same problem. No display pics for my contacts.

June 14, 2006 at 8:17 pm #85022Tea GrannyMemberIs it possible there is a problem with your flash player?
Perhaps your flash player needs to be updated, or is corrupted somehow?
I know you need your flash player (up to date) to view winks properly, but is it possible that the flash player is also used for the animated display pictures and animated backgrounds?
I don’t know if the flash player has anything to do with it, but it is one more thing for you to check.
June 20, 2006 at 4:20 am #85026PhilipModeratorHi Tea:
I uninstalled my existing Flash players and installed fresh ones from Adobe’s web site. However, the problem is still there. I can’t see anyone’s display pictures, all I get is the standard blue messenger icon. Everything else is working great, but this display pic problem is really annoying me. 😡
On another note, the final version of WLM (8.0.0787) has a lousy Contact signs in sound IMHO. The Beta version had a nice, crisp ding. If you’d like to keep the beta version sound, save the online.wma sound clip to another area in your hard drive first, before installing version 8.0.0787. Then copy it to the MSN Messenger folder in Program Files and overwrite the existing one.
Cheers,

I don’t really have any more ideas to suggest myself, but here is a link to a previous post that is similar to yours. It says pretty much what princeG already said, but maybe there are some other ideas in there you can try.
I wish you luck!
June 20, 2006 at 3:13 pm #85027PhilipModeratorDear All:
After several continuous days of swearing and frustration, I’ve finally found the answer to my display picture woes. It is NOT Messenger, but Zone Alarm firewall (which I have installed) specifically version 6.5.xxx. I discovered this in the Zone Labs forums http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs Look for the IMSecure & IMSecure Pro discussions. It seems that a lot of people have been plagued by this display pic problem and so far Zone Labs hasn’t offered any solutions!
The only way I could get my display pictures back was to shut down Zone Alarm entirely and then restart Messenger. Another trick I discovered was to ensure that ZA doesn’t load during Windows startup. Do this by going to ZA’s Overview > Preferences tab. Uncheck Load Zone Alarm at startup. After rebooting, make sure you are signed in to Messenger first, THEN start ZA.
As PrinceG so aptly put it, the road to success is always under construction.
Have a good day,
PhilipP/S Tea, thanks for the help and reply.
June 21, 2006 at 9:32 pm #85031AstheniaParticipantIs there away to solve it w/o taking down my firewall?
Yeah, I can take it off then turn MSN on then turn my firewall back on but it just goes back to not working again.
June 22, 2006 at 3:59 am #85028PhilipModeratorAsthenia, I assume you mean Zone Alarm. What I’m doing presently is this: I don’t allow ZA to load up during Windows startup (but Messenger is allowed). Once I’m signed in on MSN, I check to make sure I can see all my display pictures. Only then do I turn ZA on. Done this way, ZA doesn’t seem to wipe out my display pics.
Please post back if the above method still doesn’t work on your system.

June 22, 2006 at 5:36 am #85032AstheniaParticipantWhat I did was downgrade to 6.1
Thanks for the help, downgarding was less work for me
June 29, 2006 at 11:54 am #85033MattChanMemberIf your Display Pictures, Personal Messages, and Names are not coming through properly, it’s probably down to Zone Alarm, if you have it installed!
See this Post for a fix:

i’m new here at blueball, using msn for a long time without any problems.
anybody can tell me what is ZA, and why all of you use it if it gives u such a hard time? in this thread only, people r disconecting it/downgrade their msn/ have problems because it’s on. so what does it does, which makes it worthwhile using it?
thanks
