Well, after reading a post on Tigerblade’s Blog and having my own thoughts about weather, politics, etc… it made me wonder…is it time? A lot of things have been happening recently, such as the Iraq stuff, and the weather has been crazy. Warm, cold, warm, cold, warm, cold, warm rain, cold snow, cold, cold….Is the Apocalypse on us? If so, I better get my girlfriend going to church, heh nothing would be worse then leaving behind a best pal. I for one think, we are close. I didn’t want to see this in my lifetime, but looks as if I will. I mean, remember the tsunami? And that earthquake? Then our hurricanes? A HECK OF A LOT OF PEOPLE DIED. So, your views?
March 15, 2006 at 1:22 am #140160FancyMemberhi mr salad,
I’ll be curious to hear other’s views on your topic, however, my opinion is that people have always felt that the events taking place around them were sure signs of the ‘end’, ‘apocalypse’, ‘armageddon’, whatever term you prefer. The reality of it is sometimes revealed in history. Our greatest hurricane was not Katrina but one that occured Sept 8th 1900 in Galvaston TX and took nearly 8,000 lives…another in 1926, with a death toll of over 4,000 (significantly higher than the current number of just over 1400 for Katrina) Same with major earthquakes and tsunamis, we have reached an age of instant reporting of disasters and we are now in touch with the world via satellite feeds and internet connections so we see more of the disasters as they play out. I think that’s why people feel so much is happening right now. The earth always has, and always will be in a constant state of flux…with the key word there being ‘constant’. Ok ok..I’m a geologist. 🙂
March 15, 2006 at 1:27 am #140159MrEggsaladParticipantWow, some very good points, and stuff I haven’t thought of. Yes, I do agree that now because of the communication we have, it seems more has happened…but then how do you explain the weather? I do know that the weather a couple years ago wasn’t as it is now. I think we all can agree there has been a change, and maybe that’s global warming…I think we may be close to the End, but again, who really knows?
March 15, 2006 at 5:05 am #140154EEDOKMemberEarth is getting overpopulated, nature is just trying to balance it out.
March 18, 2006 at 3:04 am #140156QwertyMemberSaying the Iraq war is a sign of the closing apocalypse would be pretty damn self-righteous. Wars are going on all over the world, all the time. Just because the world’s greatest super power is involved doesn’t means its apocalyptic or anything.
On the weather side, the jury is still out there. We have been recording global weather for such an extmrley short period of the Earth’s history we simply do not know. Although, we do know that gloably, the earth has gone through periods of global warmth and global freezing before we were even around. But I still don’t know.
However, I am sure humans and possibly the Earth will be gone in the next 1000 years and not because of any god. Humans are going to kill each other with our own technology. It’s that basic. Imagine 500 years from now, a cold war a billion times more intense, but this time, one country snaps and it’s no longer cold.

Cultural difference = tension
In terms of weather and natural disaster, it’s already been attributed to the greenhouse effect. We’re opening a big bloody hole in our atmosphere; one could hardly expect the climate to go a little wacky. 2005 had more hurricanes than ever recorded before in history, all because of something simple as CO2 emissions.
Whether or not the Kyoto protocol is enough initiative taken is a different story. To have the world’s major producer of CO2 emissions (Namely the States, and Canada soon to follow) abstaining from the protocol is almost defying it’s purpose… but I’ll stop here. 🙂
March 18, 2006 at 8:40 pm #140151Jeff HesterKeymasterOne thing’s for sure, we’re all going to be wiped out eventually. Earth + Comet = Kapoot.
Yes I know my post isn’t quite as insightful as most here but I feel rather bleh at the moment so bear with me.
March 18, 2006 at 8:40 pm #140161FancyMemberYikes Anna, Don’t hold back girl…tell us how you really feel 🙂 As for me, I’m just gonna jump on my bike and peddle on over to the grocery store to buy some organically grown veggies. Is it just me…or is it getting warm in here?

Cultural difference = tensionI have no doubt that is true. As I said before, im sure the human race will wipe out itself in the next 1000 years for the same reason. I just don’t think it’s going to happen with a war involving a pro-democracy super power and a couple thousand rebels.
I’m talking super power on super power apolalyptic missile war. Not some street battle with machine guns and rpgs.
And back to the weather. like I said, We have been recording weather for such a short period of the earth’s history stats can be extmrley bias. Think of the last 500 years or whatever as an axtrmely extrmely small sample size. I’m not saying we are warming or not, just that we can’t be sure.
March 19, 2006 at 10:30 am #140158sarahtownyMemberI must admit here in the uk we are taking the global warming very seriously.
There is now a big emphasis on recycling (about time!). For instance we have different boxes for our rubbish (or garbage as americans say), one for tins, one for bottles (bottles sorted in to different colours of glass) and we even have collections for old clothes etc.
At work all our paper is recycled and they measure each collection so it is recorded, we are then notified of how many trees we have saved. I also got a notice at work that the government will allow us to buy pushbikes cheaper through the company, as an incentive to get people out of cars. Signs are going up all over saying share your car etc
They might only be small things but it’s a start, my family think I am a bit barmy about recycling, but I personally believe if we all do our bit, however small it makes a difference.
Anyway lol back to is this the end of the world etc, due to the recent erratic weather, nope I don’t think so but I would bet your bottom dollar if you spoke to someone in the future they would put this era of our history as the time we treated our planet like crap.
Hehe I never rant but this is something I feel quite strongly about! As you can see 😉
March 19, 2006 at 10:50 am #140153TaraMemberI fully agree with you, saratowny. Can you say something more?
March 22, 2006 at 8:06 pm #140155RabidKittenParticipantRecycling… *snickers* Yeah, I’m a big hippy nutcase, yadda yadda, but really just the sterilization for a lot of recycling causes more harm than it does good. If you’re just worried about overusing materials, then huzzah it’s not that bad, but when it comes to general polution and all that…well yeah, a lot of the time it does more bad than good.
For a really great little show about it…see if you can find Penn and Teller’s Bull****! – Recycling. It’s really quite interesting… and cuts down on that pesky “Reading” stuff. *shrug* I’ve found that most things are better received when put into a comedy-esque backed form of media anyway.
