ParticipantIf you cant use MSN Messenger, or anything else why dont you try ICQ Anywhere or ICQ-2-Go. (I havent fixed my problem yet with ICQ 2 Go{(my contacts are missing, but Jeff’s arnt})Its a really easy way to chat with friends when you have some free time with out downloading anything…
To use this go to http://www.icq.com and click on ICQ Anywhere, when that page loads click on load ICQ 2 Go from any web browser, on the right hand side..

KeymasterInstant messaging didn’t even exist when I was in school, but I’ve heard of professors using IM to let students contact them online instead of meeting them during designated office hours.
Here in the U.S. there are some universities such as the University of Phoenix which offer online classes. Students collaborate on projects using a combination of email, discussion forums and instant messaging.
I’ve also heard anectdotal evidence of teachers using collaborate tools such as NetMeeting with it’s whiteboard and application sharing to actually teach classes. Try this search on Google about distance learning.
Of course, most students today are comfortable with IM, and use it regularly to keep in touch with friends and family.

MemberSome software companies in the education space are starting to integrate IM into their existing product offerings.
Blackboard, for example, has a number of IM “building blocks” that allow the integration of consumer or enterprise IM (Bantu) products into their platform. This allows students and professors to send real-time messages in the context of their classes.
A lot of colleges and university IT departments are starting to realize that they want to offer their own IM solution, in a way similar to offering e-mail for students and staff.
The lack of any true interoperability standards makes this a decision between proprietary technologies (at least for the moment.)

But I voted for the “friends and family” one because that is closest.
