There is a “friendly fork” of gaim, called gaim-vv (video & voice). The idea is to develop the code separately (and hence faster) and when stuff is more production ready, merge the changes back into the main gaim project.
I haven’t used gaim-vv (because I use alot of the new features in the later gaim releases… gaim-vv is at 0.77 or so I think), but I believe its pretty functional… there are screenshots on the website of a two way video session, and I think sound is working aswell.

Someone’s made a start at incorporating the gaim-vv code into the gaim-1.1.0 release, see http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1190447&forum_id=353893, I couldn’t get this to compile yet and from the components I dont think its complete yet.
But.. as you can see… Linux is catching up!
