Participantusually the DVDs are encoded differently per country, its to prevent someone from watching a movie that was released at place A and wont be realeased awhile at place B

DVD’s arn’t encoded by Country, they are encoded by Region. I think there are 6 regions in total.
Sarah – Unless you have a multi-region DVD player, then there’s no chance of the DVD playing. Our region is Region 2, so ensure all DVD’s you buy are Region 2 DVD’s.
Region 2 covers all of Europe.

Well, if you or someone you know has a DVD burner, you could just decrypt the DVD and change the Region Code when you reburn it. I don’t see anything “illegal” about backing up your own DVD with a minor region code adjustment. 😉I suggest DVDShrink, it will decrypt the DVD protections, compress the video to fit on a 4.7GB DVD+R and will let you re-encode as Region Free.

MemberSarah, get a “region free” dvd player or make your current dvd player multi-region.
If your dvd player is from any major brand, you can most likely make it region free for €50 or less.

ParticipantWhat about a computer with a DVD player, wouldn’t it be able to play any region?

MemberShadowdogMU wrote:What about a computer with a DVD player, wouldn’t it be able to play any region? The answer would be yes but no, it is up to the software player that you are using. Some software lets you change the region code up to 5 times, after that it lock up on the last region you chose.

MemberDon’t want to sound dim but anyway loaded the dvd and a page comes up saying – “dvd mismatch, you need to change your region code – you can do this up to 4 times.” Then there is a list only area one is listed (USA) but if I choose that surely I am just copying another usuable DVD as it will be coded for american viewing… am I wrong?

Your DVD drive is of course set to Region 2. Your DVD drive will allow you to change your Region up to 4 times, so it is ok for you to switch temporarily to Region 1 to copy your DVD, then simply change back to Region 2 when you’ve successfully copied your DVD. This change is only for the reading of the DVD and will not affect the burning of the new DVD region as this is set directly in DVDShrink as you can see below.

ParticipantThat window should have popped up when you hit the backup button in DVDShrink.

Membershifter wrote:That window should have popped up when you hit the backup button in DVDShrink. Not necessarily Shifter, the best way is just go into the program’s options menu and change it. DVDShrink should have its default option as All Region, so changing won’t be necessary.
NOTE: DVDShrink will ask what is the DVD Region of your source drive (the disk that you want to copy) after pressing the Backup button. Make sure you specify the correct region. -
