This is my exact problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818733/en-usI have e-mailed microsoft asking for the hotfix, they sent it to me and it never resolved the problem. They couldn`t help continue because my Product ID has OEM in it.
They said I must contact my PC manufacturer. 🙁 I do not know who my manufacturer is? It doesn`t even say on the tower…
Maybe you guys can help solving my problem or maybe helping my figure out who my manufacturer is?

I’d say first try to use a different brand of DVD-RW’s, then a different DVD-R/RW drive. It can’t be Windows’ fault because I can read DVD-RW’s just fine.
I’ve tried different brands. 🙁 I even tried playing real DVD’s. 🙁
It used to work but now its been 6 months it hasn’t!
Then your DVD drive is probably shot. They’re really sensitive, and you have to be careful to choose a good brand. I’ve had this problem happen to a few friends here, wierd things that go wrong with DVD drives.
Just buy a new one, is all I can offer as far as advice. If you’re wondering brand-wise, I’d say a Sony, because I’ve had mine for 3 years now and it’s never crapped out on me.
Regular CD’s work though thats what I don’t understand??? Its only DVD’s that don’t get read… 🙁

The CD function of a DVD burner is vasty less complex, and it uses a different laser to read and write. I’m not surprised that it still works, while the DVD portion doesn’t.
