well… i suppose it might depend on what sort of “ecommerce” site you want to build. can you be a little more specific as to what exactly you want to do?
We are currently debating on weather to use .net or .php. We have one developer that pushes for .net and is kind of a fool. Our other potential developer is a php nut. The PHP developer is much more keen on talking us (the designers) through what he is doing and what he needs done to make things happen. In the end my question is if we go the php route will we be able to come up with a well developed ecommerce site this including a mysql database. again the background work on web is something more foreign then hondas to me so i hope this helps you in helping us answer our question.

well… either one will probably be able to do the job. personally i prefer PHP, as it seems to be more flexible, especially if you want database connectivity.
what i had meant more was, how deep is this ecommerce site going to be? like… large-scale shopping cart purchases, individual purchases of a single product, etc.

The business we are doing it for, is just like Best Buy. So just imagine that.
Bronxy, is this a large national chain? If so, they should have deep pockets — enough to handle a custom e-commerce site. You could do it in either PHP or .NET — either is up to the task. The client may have a preference based on their current capabilities for supporting LAMP or Windows servers.
If it’s not a big chain with deep pockets, I would recommend starting with an existing shopping cart and customizing it. For .NET I recommend StoreFront and for PHP I recommend OSCommerce.
