Edition #2The story…
You’ll see them standing there everyday, on the platform of Illinois Central: people waiting for their train. If you watch long enough you’ll also see them disappear again.There, in the crowd on the platform, stands Lucy. She’s ready to leave… for good. She doesn’t have a choice, because the train of her life has come to a junction and taken a different direction. I don’t think we’ll ever know for sure what happened, but she doesn’t have a place to live in anymore, or a family to come home to. It’s horrible. I don’t think she’ll ever come back here at all, even though she was born and raised here. The train is about to leave and I mumble, “Hurry up Lucy, you’ll miss your train!”
Then the wheels of the train slowly start turning and the train slowly starts moving. It glides over cold bars of steel, towards the hills, towards a destination far away from here and towards an uncertain future.
And while I’m looking at the train slowly leaving the platform, I think to myself: “If I would lose everyone I love… which train would I take?”
The song…?

You were correct. A great song by a great band: The Doobie Brothers – Long train running.
[thread=27591]Congratulations[/thread]! What gave it away?
January 8, 2005 at 8:26 pm #111443TigerbladeParticipanti have some friends who are really into the doobie bros (for obvious reasons), so i’d at least heard the song before… as opposed to the first two you posted. and this time i actually had the song on my playlist, so i could check to make sure.
mostly it was lucy at the “illinois central” that gave it away, though

Although it’s understandable why, but I guess it just takes something like this to make you listen to the words, rather the music. And has Hyperbyte pointed out to me, this does have a very similar comparison with what is happening in Asia right now.
Thank you for that DJ.

They have to take a song of the era and analyse the lyrics…and take a modern song, analyse the lyrics…then compare the time periods and issues. It is actually a LOT of work (even if you do not think it looks like it). It also accomplishes many things: 1. they learn about Vietnam and can bring it into context. 2. They discover that music does have meaning and a LOT of today’s music is crap. 😀 I love the project as much as they do…there’s something about seeing people discover and appreciate art right in front of your eyes that is beautiful in its own right.
