do you have to have a email on hotmail to use msn messenger or can my email be located on a differnt site and still check my email be clicking on the link in the msn window?????
You can setup a .NET Passport (used as your login for MSN Messenger) with any valid email address, but you won’t be able to check your email unless you are using @hotmail.com or @msn.com addresses.

It’s a feature that allows MSN to check your POP3 e-mail account for e-mail and report it on the link where your Hotmail e-mail account status is usually displayed.
