ParticipantWell you were a step ahead of me on disabling Avast and trying to login. That was going to be the next step. I’m puzzled on this one.
Because you are able to access any of the accounts via web messenger or another computer it really pretty much rules out server side issues.
The complete uninstall and reinstall with RevoUninstaller wipes out all excess files, folders and registry entries so anything that might have been corrupted should have been removed. Yet it still happens after a fresh install. And further, previous working accounts no longer do so consistently.
The symptoms really don’t indicate a user account issue in Windows but lets try that workaround anyway. Create a new user account on the machine and make sure it has administrator privileges. Then login under this new account and see if you are able to login to the WLM account that’s been giving you trouble.
Are you having any problems with anything else on the machine? Do you already have multiple user accounts on the computer?

ParticipantNever hurts to try again, but a re-read of the first post would seem to indicate those fixes have already been tried and/or are not applicable to the programs in use on this system.

MemberSorry, I just couldn’t resist because I think it’s a specific account problem since he was able to login to another account.
btw, have you tried deleting the 4 folders for contacts cache?
1. Exit WLM.
2. Click Start, click Run, type “%USERPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftIdentityCRL” then press ENTER on your keyboard. Delete all files in the folder.3. Click Start, click Run, type “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftIdentityCRL” then delete all files in the folder.
4. Click Start, click Run, type “%USERPROFILE%Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftWindows Live Contacts” then delete all files in the folder.
5. Click Start, click Run, type “%USERPROFILE%Contacts” then delete all files in the folder.
Skip these if you’ve already done all of them.
Have you tried logging in on a different XP Profile?

MemberTried creating a new windows user account, logged into msn from it, and still the same error.
Tried removing everything the other poster suggested, still getting the error.
Having trouble getting my other computer to connect to the internet, but i want to try to log on from a different computer again to make sure i can.
I guess i can try uninstalling avast, but i don’t see why i’d be able to log into one account but not another if avast was the issue.
Ugh.

ParticipantUnless you are using different Windows user profiles to log into different accounts (which it doesn’t souund like you are) I’d really not expect Avast is the source of the problem. That’s not to say it isn’t but you already tried disabling it, and in general that’s a reasonable way to know if your AV is the problem.
Let me just double check. Do you happen to have any other Anti-Virus program installed on the machine, running or not? Also, are you running any other real-time malware/spyware program besides Avast? For instance, I know of several people who use the “security suite” provided by their DSL carrier. Something like that could cause a conflict with both Windows firewall and/or Avast if you happen to be using something like that on your machine.
I’m running low on ideas here. But please let me know on this, and also if you are able to resolve connectivity on the other machine. If you’re having other internet issues it might be worth a call to your ISP just to be sure there’s nothing going on or to see if they can test your signal in any way. I know I had a cable issue once where water was getting in the lines and all kinds of strange intermittent things happened.

I do not have any other antivirus software installed on my machine. I have MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyFreeware installed.
If any of these were the issue, wouldn’t i NOT be able to log into my other account also?
I can consistently log into one account, but consistently not log into the other.
I was able to use my other machine to connect with the original address, so it looks like it’s located to just this computer. This is driving me nuts, and i really don’t want to have to reformat, but i don’t know what else to do…and what if that doesn’t even work??
Is there a good free antivirus software you suggest that i could run to make sure i have no viruses that might be causing this? I just don’t understand why only ONE address is being affected.
Thanks again for your help, sorry for the long delay in responding.

ParticipantRun this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus ScannerNext Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
- The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
- Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
- Now click on Scan Settings
- In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
- Standard
- Scan Options:
- Scan Archives
- Scan Mail Bases
- Click OK
- Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
- This will program will start and scan your system.
- The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
- Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
- Save the file to your desktop.
Online scans will generally not “fix” anything for free for you, but you should not pay to have them do it. If it finds anything, let me know and we’ll go from there.
I also know of a number of other sites you could use for online scans if you have any problems with this one or if you want a 2nd opinion on whatever it may or may not find.
Now, after that, please let me know if you are game to remove WLM again, and do some serious cleanup on temp files and the registry. If it were me, this is where I would be headed just now. You need to be aware that the process I’m suggesting will remove, as a part of the cleanup, any stored logins/passwords for websites. If you don’t have those saved for easy access you’ll want to let me know ahead of time.
Also, is there anything at all else you can think of that is not behaving at this point? Anything at all? Even something totally unrelated? I’m torn between some file corrupted somewhere and malware that may have buried itself somewhere. Problem is malware if it was removed (as with your initial virus scan) and that came back upon reboot is usually more destructive than just a WLM account. But anything is possible, so we’ll keep at it if you’re game to try another removal and reinstall.

Hello!! Sorry for the delay, i’ve been so busy! Thank you for continuing to help me, i appreciate it!
I ran the kaspersky online scan above, and it found this:
C:Documents and Settings…Local SettingsApplication DataOperaOperaprofilecache4opr02HUM Infected: Trojan-Downloader.JS.Agent.ecn
C:Documents and Settings…Local SettingsTempwJQs.exe Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Injecter.cvy
C:WINDOWSsystem32sfcfiles.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Patched.frHow do i get rid of them?
I wouldn’t mind running a few other online scans as i find avast will find things like this, and it will clean them, and then i could run a scan the next day and it would find similar things it didn’t find the first time.
Yes, i can remove/reinstall WLM as much as you please, i don’t mind, i just want this issue fixed!
Yes, there are a few other issues i’ve noticed in the past few months:
1. I started getting this REALLY annoying popup that pops up on the windows taskbar that says:
Active Update
The following update is ready to install.
Security Update – Critical: AOL has identified a security vulnerability that can be used to execute malicious code. To correct, install this update. You may need to shut down applications and restart your computer. Click here for details. And i don’t even have AOL installed!
2. Sometimes when i click on links in internet explorer, it will take me to some other site no matter what i click on, which makes me think adware is installed. I run a virus scan and this stops, but a few weeks later, it seems to come back.
3. As i mentioned above, sometimes i’ll run a virus scan one day, and then if i run it again, it will find things it didn’t find the last time, even if i haven’t touched my computer.
4. Some javascript items recently stopped working in firefox, for instance clicking on “post” on message boards.
Thank you for continuing to help me, looking forward to the next steps!

ParticipantAntiVirus scanners use databases which are not identical, and one may find malware that another does not.
Some online scanners:
TrendMicro HouseCall: http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.phpPanda ActiveScan: FREE ANTIVIRUS – Download ActiveScan 2.0 and clean your PC – PANDA SECURITY
Kaspersky Online Scanner (using Internet Explorer): Online Anti-Virus Scanner & Free Virus Scan – Kaspersky Lab
BitDefender: Free Online Virus Scan – BitDefender Online Scanner
I’d like to remind you that these scans generally do not fix anything, they simply help identify if you have malware present on your machine. Do not pay to have them remove anything, there are free options for assistance.
Based on the information you have provided, and the descriptions of the additional problems you have been experiencing on your machine, I think it is safe to say you have malware on your machine that needs to be addressed prior to dealing with any other software problems.
I would strongly suggest you visit the forums at What The Tech or Geeks to Go. Follow their individual instructions for how to request help in removing malware. It will be important to tell them the results of your online scans as well as any other Anti-virus or anti-malware software you have run. After support at one of these sites has given you the “all clean” please let me know if you are still experiencing WLM issues.
