I’ve had several people ask me if we could expand BigBlueBall to cover more than just instant messaging and chat technology, to cover the full spectrum of tech. I’ve resisted, so far, but I thought why not open up the discussion to our faithful members and let them help set the course.
Give us your opinion!
January 6, 2007 at 9:27 pm #156575Jeff HesterKeymasterThe messengers that are here are not kept up-to-date.
January 6, 2007 at 10:18 pm #156582Eagle_KiwiMemberI guess I feel similarly, that BBB seems hard-pressed to keep things together and up to date as it is – expanding into others would spread the available resources even thinner still.
AND personally I still can’t find my way around all the countless threads/links/shortcuts etc here – heaven forbid if there were even MORE ! 🙁

I agree with that… but I think I could be more help if it were to cover more tech… I’m just not very into IMing… (which is why I’ve been looking at the General Computer problems more than the IM threads…:))
January 6, 2007 at 10:36 pm #156576Jeff HesterKeymasterthe following sentence is from the newest post “Yahoo! Messenger 6 review” under Yahoo tips and tricks.
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a major release of Yahoo! Messenger, but it appears to have been worth the wait.
Yahoo! Messenger 6 is now available for public beta testing, meaning that anyone who is interested can download it and give it a try.
“It was still in beta when you made this post”Only you can change these posts and add new ones. I did send you stuff to update some of these.
January 7, 2007 at 5:33 am #156581MrEggsaladParticipantI feel we should stick to instant messaging. MANY sites do all sorts of tech things, only a few do instant messaging. And with that, I feel we should go and update our IM centers and whatnot to make sure they are they best they can be, so, it looks like we are on the right path 🙂
January 7, 2007 at 7:35 am #156578detn8rParticipantI disagree. I think anyone who has a keen focus on Instant Messaging knows that the IM world isn’t that big of a hype anymore. People know what they want, and basically stick to it. But with BigBlueBall the main traffic flow has halted dramatically! I’ve been a member of BBB since Jan. 02 and let me tell you, the traffic and flow of regular posters have fallen. There is obvious reasons why, but personally, I believe it’s because people are either loosing interest (as I said above, it’s not a big hype anymore so people loose interest) or theres just not a lot to talk about and they find else where to go and talk about.
BigBlueBall’s name isn’t specifically targeted towards IM, which means there is a great oppertunity to expand without having to change names for people to understand. We have a good background as it is with support for the computer section as well as the off topic forums. We NEED to expand to allow more people in and to basically liven this place up. It can get REALLY boring just coming in answering questions, and then leaving. Having a bigger forum and website means more people, more INTERESTING people, more things to talk about and more of a reason to come back.
BBB needs it. Regardless if we do a good job of answering questions, we’ve mastered it.. now lets move on and try something new. We have great staff. The staff need a new challenge. We have good foundations on moderating. We know what do to, and how to do it properly and to keep it clean. We have a good reputation as a clean knowledgeable website that has been around since the beginning. Lets kick it up a notch. PLEASE!
January 7, 2007 at 8:42 am #156586PhilipModeratorI tend to agree with detn8r, mainly because I am a computer geek myself (I’ve been servicing and building computers for about 11 years or so). I wouldn’t mind contributing some more knowledge into BBB besides WLM 🙂
January 7, 2007 at 11:33 am #156584Tea GrannyMemberOnly two responses in this thread are from non paying members. That in itself should tell you something needs to change. What, I don’t know, but it is time for some kind of change if you want a larger membership to hang around.
People want to talk on IM, not about it. Most people who are new to IM just get what ever their friends have. No need to shop and compare.
I think detn8r is right, the hype is gone. People go to forums for specific needs. They come here for IM answers.
I go to game forums for my game answers. I go to OE forums for my OE answers. Etc. If you want a larger membership to hang around, you need to attract them.
January 7, 2007 at 11:58 am #156583FancyMemberI vote for expansion! Spread out and cover every available inch of the cyber kingdom. I want my Blue Ball to be even BIGGER…plus Jeff need to be kept busy so he stays out of trouble. I thought we were going to have a special forum for messenger related social issues like cheating on your mate in IMs, and solving the burning issue: “is it cheating if its only done in cyberspace?” By the way…where is 2nd base when messaging?
January 7, 2007 at 1:49 pm #156579imported_EvilSephMemberI don’t have time to write up a true reply, but I’ll get around to it…I hope.
In short, I say go for it! Not only do I KNOW our staff have more talent than we recognize them for, but I also KNOW that our members will be able to express themselves and give back to BigBlueBall (like I KNOW a lot of them want to do) in their own special way. Besides, sites like that big techie news one (try and guess the name ;)) could use some worthy competition.
Ok..this is a terrible reply. I’ll have to re-write it when I actually wake up…
January 7, 2007 at 8:28 pm #156585PolarBearNPRParticipantI agree with many here about expansion. But don’t know if tech is the way to start. BBB is associated with IMing, even though the name doesn’t state it, and perhaps that should be the first tier of growth. My first question here was about IM usage among kids, so I was looking for advice from users. If I had a question about my messanger at that point I probably would have gone to the Yahoo help desk *ducks as Ian throws a shoe.*
Was a time when the Off Topic section was much more active than it is now; and I think that developing a sense of community among folks, in that forum, who stop by here would not only increase traffic with repeaters, but also increase the number of folks willing to pay for membership. And IMing is about building relationships it seems – meeting new people, sharing points of view, etc. If indeed increasing membership and traffic are goals, I think this is where the expansion should initially focus, creating community.
If however, becoming the mecca for answers on all things tech is the goal, then forums for those things should be expanded/created. This would of course mean additional, dedicated staff with willingness and expertise in these areas. I know lots of the folks currently active here are computer savvy and can answer so many questions already, but to do it right, it would need staffed appropriately. And we don’t want to burn out anyone either!
The bottom line I think for BBB is to decide what the goals are: community or tech; repeaters or resource. Or both!

wow, its been forever since i’ve been here (like 2 years, wow!)…………. but i was told to come anc post by my good likke buddy graham there. i have to agree with what he said. although i havent been around (well the past two years) i have to agree that instant messaging isnt as popular as it use to be. i dont have the greatest interest in it, not that i ever did but maybe if there was other things like those other people suggested, it would gain my interest to stop by more often!
