I have an ACOM DATA External HDD, 7200 RPM, 120GB, USB 2.0/FireWire. I was riding in my car with it plugged in to an AC to DC power converter. Suddenly all the data on it went bad and all my apps that I was runnning from it closed. When I checked, Winows said it needed to be formatted. I (reluctantly) did that, and with no luck. At the end of the format, it was ‘unable to complete the format.’ So I tried Partition Magic 7 Pro and that couldn’t help either. Any utilities or suggestions to get my HD back??? My puny 9.35 GB HD that my laptop has is FULL and my computer is useless without my external. Thanks!
So you had it plugged into where exactly? My first inclination is that you were using an unreliable source of power and it perhaps surged and gave your HD a little toasting. If you are unable to format, I would guess that your hard drive is somewhat fried. Perhaps you can return it to where you purchased it if its not too old?
I had it plugged into a car outlet in an Astro Van, but I had a RadioShack Ac to SC Power converter. But you’re probably right. Can I take it to like BestBuy and get it fixed or do I have to buy a whole new one…
Well, if its too late to attempt any exchanges on it, buying a new HD is going to be way cheaper than any attempt at fixing it (which probably isn’t even possible).
