I have a few questions about the new Facebook messaging system that is being rolled out.
From what I’ve heard, two of the major changes are:
1. E-mail, chat, SMS and regular messages are being integrated into one central interface.
2. Subject lines are no longer used as the new messaging feature is designed to be informal. So my questions are as follows:
1a. Right now, chat and regular messaging are two different features. In the new version, will messaging be essentially be the same as IM’ing? In other words, will I be able to “chat” with any user that allows messages from non-friends?
1b. Currently, users have the option to turn off the chat feature, in which case they will appear offline. They can still be contacted through their inbox, just not the chat feature. Will the new version make this obsolete?More specifically, in the current version, friends can still send you messages even with the strictest privacy settings. Supposedly, the new version will allow a user to control who they get messages from. If the chat and inbox are really merged, does this mean that we can disallow messages from a friend altogether?
2. If someone using the old messaging system sends a message to someone using the new one, the subject line will merely become the line of the message. But what about the other way around? In other words, what happens if someone using the new system sends a one-liner to a friend who’s using the old version? -
