Argh….having issues with the darn Facebook Connect pop up. Was already logged into BBB by “Remember me” (and it was tied to my FB forever ago). Tried to post and the FB pop up came up but said there was an error with BBB. There was no way to post a reply once that came up. Clicking submit again made my FB page show in the what was previously the error box. At first I thought it was a Chrome problem, but I could reproduce it on IE as well when logging in fresh using my BBB login and password.
Removed all BBB associations on FB itself (from the Applications page). Logged out of BBB (but not FB). Logged back into BBB not using FB Connect. Same problem.
Finally, in annoyed desperation I logged into BBB using only the FB Connect button and hoped for the best. It seemed to fix the problem, but I don’t like being forced to use FB to connect so I had to forge on to see what happened when I totally removed it again.
Went back to FB and removed BBB. Logged out of FB. Logged out of BBB. Logged back into BBB not using FB – using only my standard login and password. However, even after removing BBB from my FB applications – I got the FB pop up box again telling me something was wrong with BBB – try again later. (I know it was the FB box because the title at the top said so.)
Finally, I’m logged back in using only FB connect. Are we no longer able to log in just using our regular login and password? And if regular logins work, how can I get rid of FB being tied to my account? Obviously, removing it from FB doesn’t work….. (XP SP3, Chrome 5.0.375.70 beta, IE 8.0.6001.18702, latest stable Java and Flash.)
June 17, 2010 at 12:16 pm #176686Doris KenneyParticipantI tested further and the problem seems to stem from being on a machine (at work) where I cannot allow my password for FB to be retained. But that’s a setting on FB itself – not BBB. The only apparent way to post on BBB is to logout and reconnect via FB each an every session. On another machine (at home) where I do allow it to save the FB password, it’s fine and all works beautifully.
So my question still remains, is the intent that we must use FB connect now? For users who may be blocked from FB (or who don’t want to use it) it would be impossible to post 🙁
Can anyone else reproduce the problem or is it just me??
June 17, 2010 at 2:25 pm #176679Jeff HesterKeymasterI tested just moments ago. Signed out of Facebook. Navigated to BigBlueBall. Was not logged in on the forums here. Logged in (using the “old” method, not Facebook) and now here I am.
So it seems to be working, at least for me. We probably need to do a little more testing. I’ll see if I can get a few other users to try it.
Also, I wasn’t behind a corporate firewall (they block Facebook). I will try that next.
June 17, 2010 at 2:27 pm #176678Jeff HesterKeymasterOkay, as an update, when I posted the above reply, I got a pop-up window saying “You must be logged in to post to Facebook” (I had previously configured my connection to auto-post to FB). I hit the “cancel” button on that window, and then the post went through (as you can see above).
June 17, 2010 at 3:03 pm #176684Doris KenneyParticipantI was getting an error on BBB in the popup with no way to “cancel” only close. I can work around it but it just seemed very odd.
Logging out of BBB and back in with FB connect fixes it for me. I’m going to clear cache and cookies and see if that helps matters any.
June 17, 2010 at 3:12 pm #176676Jeff HesterKeymasterTesting now from behind the firewall (with no FB access).
June 17, 2010 at 3:12 pm #176677Jeff HesterKeymasterInteresting… that seemed to go right through. No pop-up at all!
June 17, 2010 at 3:27 pm #176685Doris KenneyParticipantI cleared all my cache and cookies and went to FB and removed BBB from applications.
When I click submit it wants me to login via FB and the little pop up goes crazy showing a million times and resizing constantly, but if I’m really careful (and quick) I think I can click cancel which will indeed let it post.
Why if I’ve removed BBB from FB and I’m not logged in via FB Connect – am I still getting the FB pop up prompt? Is there any way to disable that??
Edit: It may just be me so don’t spend a lot of time on it. I can work around it.
June 18, 2010 at 11:08 pm #176680Jeff HesterKeymasterI’ll do some more investigation this weekend and will report back. There might be something that needs updating with all the changes Facebook has implemented.
October 17, 2010 at 12:03 pm #176681FanaticMemberI have disabled the Facebook Connect login capability, as this was causing no end of woes. This will very likely cause some pain to folks who ONLY ever registered or signed in using their Facebook account, but everyone else (most people) should be fine.
Please let me know here if you run across any residual side-effects from turning FB Connect off.

Awesome! The error messages were really annoying!
October 17, 2010 at 6:24 pm #176683Doris KenneyParticipantOh thank you! Thank you! I’m SO glad to hear the errors will stop.
