MemberI have a few family members who have tried many times in the past to spy on me by putting things on my computer.
Anyway.. to make a very long story short… I have some “Big Brothers” who wont mind their own business.. and have been trying to spy on me by installing things on my comp. Now I don’t know FOR SURE if I am “hacked” and/or “key-logger” free.
Does anyone know of any programs or websites out there that can ease my worries and tell me what is on my comp that could be putting my privacey in danger?

MemberKeyloggers are usually caught by antivirus software, and any other spyware can be caught by an anti-spyware program. Some free, good programs are:
Anti-Virus:
AVG Anti-VirusAnti-Spyware:
Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware (Beta)January 1, 2006 at 7:30 am #135479deedeelan05
MemberI have Ad Aware and Spy Bot Search and Destroy… they rarely turn up anything. I also use BPS spyware remover. I use Trend-Micro PC-Cillin as a real time virus scan and a fire wall… but it rarely turns up anything either.. usualy trojans.. but it’s showing nothing right now.

Memberwhat you need to do is get yourself a virus scanner. there are many available out there. some say pay ones seem to be better at detecting viruses.
avast! 4 Home Edition (free): http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
AVG (free) http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1nod32 (pay): http://nod32.com/ (trial available)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus (pay): http://kaspersky.com/ (trial available)once you have one of the above av (anti-virus) solutions installed it’s just a matter of scanning your computer for infections. you should look at the help files to figure out how to do this.
remember never to download anything from an untrusted source. this is especially true if the file has an exe extention. these types of files usually contain viruses. you may want to read some information on how to protect your self from future infections. this google search may be of use: http://google.com/search?q=protect+from+viruses+site%3Aedu+OR+site%3Aorg (restricts searches to educational/college and org sites because they are less likely to be infected with advertisements)

MemberI’d use Trend Micro Housecall. It’s an online scanner, so you don’t have to download anything, and you get the latest Virus/Worm/Trojan definitons for free. I have used it before to get rid of a worm, it worked. Very usefull Scanner.
You can find it here: http://www.housecall60.trendmicro.com/housecall

MemberHi,
Antivirus software will not always pick up keystroke loggers or root kits. Two sites that I would recommend would be http://www.thesecurityguide.com and http://www.sysinternals.com/SecurityUtilities.html . You can run the free web spyware scan from thesecurityguide.com site. This will detect and clean any spyware or keystroke loggers. I would also download and run the SysInternals RootKit Revealer to check any processes that are running. I hope this helps.

MemberMaybe just get your own PC? If it’s that bad…don’t share your PC…get a laptop and keep it near you or a safe place at all times…then you can be almost certain they are not spying on you. Though, if it is a parent putting something on your PC, well, maybe instead of trying to get rid of it and/or being paranoid you need to sit down and talk about it with them calmly.

MemberOreo had great advice.
Can I ask how you know they are spying or trying to? Privacy is very important I know and it is never nice to be spied on, I would get the parents involved and ask them to have a talk with your brothers over respecting your privacy. Most parent do listen and after all they are in the business 🙂 anyway good luck.

MemberStealth Activity Recorder and Reporter for example is not detected by any anti-virus or anti-spyware program.
Better way to protect yourself against spying is to have only one administrator account on your operating system and only you should have its password. Now even if they have something installed on your PC they shouldnt be able to access the logs if they are made locally or if they are uploaded to a remote location or emailed to them then all you need to do is install a firewall and prevent all unkown programs from accessing the internet.
Though there are ways to get around this and still spy on you but I’m sure they won’t go that far.

I am an adult, not a child (in my 20’s). The family members that are trying to snoop don’t even live with me.
Anyway… Anyone know of a good program that can hide/password protect select files on my computer?
I found one called
Cryptainer LE
it’s free. Could someone check it out and let me know if it will be a good choice for me to use? Thanks.

MemberHi, Check out the site http://www.thesecurityguide.com
There is a web page on free tools including encryption. You can also download the Security Guide e-book which is free. It has a complete section on encryption. I hope this helps.
