When I got my PC (Hewlett Packard, Windows XP, I Gig Ram, Pentium4 3.06 Ghz) two years ago, one of the first things that amazed me was how quietly it ran.
Once though, I was rendering in a 3D program and the fan started and with such a sound, it really startled me. I realize that tha program was very intensive and working the PC very hard. I never heard that sound again until I used that program again.
A year or so after that, I would hear that noise often. After some investigation, I was told that dust could do that and to clean it out. I took it to Best Buy and they did that for me. The ‘dusting’ they did helped a lot.
Now I keep it as dust free as possible however some time later, that noise is now constant. I opened the PC up, and I don’t know what to do with it. I saw a ribbon looking cable marked “slave” and it looked like it had popped out of something as some pin connectors are not into something like they look like they should be.
Could this be the reason for the noise?
I called Best Buy and have in home service, and without a lot of permitting me to talk, they have ordered me a new power supply as if that will solve everything.
Just looking for some information before the tech arrives here. I need my PC for work/business and I baby it. Also, I am not very tech minded, so forgive any terms that didn’t sound technical 🙂

Best Buy is going to want to get the most money out of you along with any other place so before buying a new power supply or anything I suggest you read this. Sometimes you don’t need an expert.
My dad has the same computer, an HP like yours and exactly everything is the same. I think he got his at Circuit City and the fan runs really loud and fast like yours. the people at HP told him to take the back apart and dust it, or spray some kind of air from a can to get rid of it. You can get this at Office Max or Staples or some other kind of office supply store.

the tech was just here. Even though I had used air can on it several times, he exposed a place I didn’t know existed, and it revealed a heavily dust covered CPU. Naturally everything that was visible to me was very well dusted, but this wasn’t.He was a very kind tech, and taught me how to reach this area myself.
Hopefully that is a mystery solved!

He turned the PC on its side and there was like a plastic dome covering the CPU fan. (Which explains how I missed it). He popped it out with his hands, but with some difficulty, and told me that perhaps I would do well to use a tool. Once that was done, the fan (and its dust) was revealed and ready for cleaning.
