MemberToday MSN blocked older Messengers from their network. If you sign in with an older version of MSN Messenger you get a pop up asking if you want to install the new version. If you click ‘No’, you’ll get disconnected.
I’ve never really used MSN Messenger 5.0 or above longer than a day, because I just don’t like them. I never could get MSN 6 to connect through a proxy (without disconnecting every minute) at all. It seems as if MSN cares more about good looks and rich features, than about productivity. I’ll have to start looking for another alternative.
Bastards. 🙁

ParticipantIf you use Windows 95 or NT, you can download MSN Messenger 5.0.

Memberi downloaded messenger 5 for win 95 and it doesn’t work, i cannot see the start up icons, and when i’m signed in, it turns off almost inmediately, then, when i try to talk to somebody my messages never reach them. What can I do!!! i want my 4.6 back! 🙁

ParticipantNo 4.6 for you!
Why in the heck would you still use 95? I suggest upgrading when you get an extra buck. As for your problems, Ive just tested v. 5 on 95, and it works normally. What do you mean start up icons? Signing you out happens to everyone, and as for the messages. must be a micro-steal yr money thing.

MemberThis is a computer from work that’s why i can’t make the upgrade by myself, i have installed this version a thousand times and i cannot put it to work, i have downloaded it from different places and does not work neither, only prior versions, now my question is: IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO? (besides making the upgrade to de win 95)

ParticipantNot as far as I can see. The best advice Id say is to pressure your admin (boss) to upgrade, or use an alternative, ex: Trillian.

Memberhow do you uninstall it because when i installed 6.0 it didnt overrun 4.6 so i have both of them
October 1, 2003 at 7:35 am #90097Anna
ParticipantYou most likely have both MSN Messenger 6.0 and Windows Messenger 4.6 (which comes default with WinXP) simultaneously installed.
This is normal, and completely harmless to your computer, however if you’d like to uninstall one (or both nevertheless) do any of the following:
- Uninstall MSN Messenger 6.0 – Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs… > MSN Messenger
- Uninstall Windows Messenger 4.6 – Run.. > RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

ParticipantOK. I tested trying 5 on 95 on another machine, and it does not work for me also. It gives all sorts of weird characters N such, on top of about 10 types of errors.

MemberI’m a little confused…. I checked for Windows updates at http://www.WindowsUpdate.com and still see that Windows Messenger 4.7 was still available. I assume that one still works?
