Recently my grandad gave me his old laptop so when school starts I can take notes on it(I have awful handwriting). And I was going to install windows on it(It was formatted when he gave it to me), but my dad must have taken the disk with him to work so I just installed a copy of Redhat Linux 9.0 that I had sitting around. Now because I am using it as a laptop at school, I have to boot fast between classes, or risk having the battery die. Now my questsion is, how can I get redhat to boot faster on this old laptop? The laptop is labled “Satellite 2596XDVD” and according to redhat it runs on an Intel Celeron Processor(400mhz), has 128 mb of ram, and the motherboard is simply labled “Toshiba” It also has the “cyber9525” video card wich is sharing 4 mb of the system memory.
I was also thinking of upgrading the memory, from what I can see it is 144 pin SDRAM, but thats all im really sure of[edit: I found a product information pdf file here.
If you see any reason why this memory(Or this?) would not work with this computer, please tell me.Also please tell me if anyone knows where I can find a replacment battery for this laptop, prefferably under $70
Start the console program ‘ntsysv’ and disable whatever you don’t need. If you’re wondering what a certain service listed in there is, the manpages and Google will help. 🙂
Is console the same thing as the terminal? Because I typed it in there and it didnt work, I also tried it from run.
For things like this, windows might be a bit better, unless your version of RH doesn’t suck too much battery? I know some laptops don’t handle Linux well because they don’t have Power Management designed for mobility (ACPI?).
But if it doesn’t suck too much battery, then that’s sweet. 🙂
Its really just temporary, because my dads in Brazil and the win xp disk is along with him. So I just need something to run on for a month or so, but I have to get a new battery though, because the old one just died on me and wont recharge. When I get win xp on their I figure I’ll upgrade the RAM anyway, its not all that bad for an old laptop, I even managed to get it to run dreameweaver today with wine emulator.
