Whats your favorite IRCd?
I’d have to say that mine is IRCu. I like how IRCu allows IRCops to actually control their own server unlike many other IRCds that make it hard for IRCops to get rid of people who are causing trouble (hybrid especially!). Also, IRCu just has a real nice configing system. (I figured it out! :p).

http://www.ircd-hybrid.comhybrid does not make it difficult to keep people away from your server, if you have general knowledge about IRCop commands. Actually, in combination with hybrid-services (hybserv), you can have complete power over every user and every channel on your server – and I know you like that. 😉

May 6, 2003 at 6:18 pm #63078SlumMemberI’m going to have to agree with Zlink123 on this one
For Daemons, from what I’ve seen and worked with IRCu is my favorite, since it is a little more configuring power than other types. Anyone else have some IRCd’s that they think are good? Throw them our way 🙂

Hybrid most definitely does not give complete control to IRCops. When I say complete control, I mean, being able to intrude upon illegal users in their +spk channels while they are in the process of distrubuting illegal software, or planning an attack on my own network. Yes, I coud just kill them, even gline them. But what good does that do? Past experiences have proven killing and gline-ing to be the worst thing to do! Doing so only encourages a period of mass evasion and dosing! If you ask me, being able to barge in on their conversation is the best defense against such rodents. I don’t know about you, but if I go somewhere and want privacy, I don’t want an IRCop sitting in on the conversation. I can assure you, that after maybe 5 channel switches, they will get tired and leave. And, if they don’t, you can resort to gline-ing.
I’ll agree that being able to limit the power of IRCops is wonderful, I mean, I get real tired of morons killing and killing for no reason. In my mind, though, the IRCop is supposed to be the[/b] all powerful one, the person who is most likely to be able to handle troublesome situations. I certainely don’t want a prankster who enjoys abusing their power at the joystick of my IRC network, so I won’t put him/her there. Instead, I’ll set up some nice services (which, I might add, are quite abundant for IRCu) and give a lower level of power to those youngsters who I really don’t want to trust my world to.
So, now, do you see? Services are for limiting power. IRCops are supposed to be all powerful. What good is a kingdom without a king?
p.s. – Sorry for the extremely late response 😉

This thread is about IRCd, not IRC networks. 🙂
