MemberThis problem isn’t occurring for me personally, but several friends of mine have been reporting the following symptoms lately.
While they’re logged in to Yahoo Messenger, they’ll visit a series of chat rooms. Several of the rooms are non-public rooms and thus they need to have a friend of theirs already in the room invite them inside. Once inside the room, they immediately add the room to their favorites. These room(s) continue to be present in their Favorite Rooms list until they sign off and later sign back on. When they sign back in later, their entire list of Favorite Rooms has disappeared.
The majority of people to which this is happening are running the 7.x version of Yahoo Instant Messenger. Of course the instant they mention this problem in the chat room, the well-intentioned (but usually totally misguided) advice of people in the room is that they need to uninstall version 7.x and install version 6.x. And occasionally, the recommendation is to install version 5.x.
Personally, I’ve been running version 7.x since the day it became available. While it certainly has its nuances (which are typically just new ways of doing things formerly available differently), I’ve not experienced any failings of 7.x and get quite a chuckle from a lot of the “experts” in the chat room and their willingness to leap to their soapbox to declare what might experts they feel themselves to be. LOL! Personally I’m not online to put them in their place or anything like that, so I sit back and laugh to myself about it.
A couple of the lessons I learned long ago in the computer field (I’ve been in this for nearly 30 years) is that you can never know it all and the best way to learn is to admit you don’t know and ask for assistance. I’ve been impressed with your sight for quite a while now not only by the visual presentation, but also by the quality of information as well as your overseeing of the forums to keep things well moderated and “on topic”.
I was hoping you might be able to provide some insight and a possible resolution to their mystery of the disappearing Favorite Room issue.
Please let me know if you need more information about their symptoms.
Thanks in advance for and direction/advice you might be able to offer!

MemberThe problem with private rooms is that the names change frequently. The spelling has to be EXACT. The only private rooms that I have seen lately have been the Group rooms that have very long numbers assigned from Yahoo in the names and it changes everytime that the room is restarted. Once everybody has left a room the room dies and has to be restarted. Used to be that USERS rooms used to be created just by “/join” command or using your favorites, then the old room would come back up, but you would lose voice support when that happened. Older versions of Messenger are supposed to be able to still create USER rooms, but I hadn’t had luck with my Messenger 5.5 in creating a new room since Yahoo had took the USERS ROOMS down last year. I have only been able to create Group Chat Rooms.
I have 5.5, I prefer to keep my offlines without having to save them. Also as you know after 30 years of experience, the less features you have the less the fewer things that go wrong. I don’t need to see avatars or listen to music when I am in Chat. I block my Yahoo’s P2P ports. But it is usually better to keep software updated, but not on the bleeding edge. Beta’s are made for the bold and knowledgeable, who are willing to report back problems. I have seen too many people who barely know how to turn their computer on rush over to download beta programs and quickly get in over their heads.

MemberThanks for the contribution and I’m sure it’s the answer to several problems. This particular issue can occur for the person under the following scenario:
– Person A asks Person B to invite them to a particular chat room
– Person A accepts the invitation
– Person A (upon entering the room) adds the room to their Favorite Rooms
– Person A (after reaching a certain point of disgust with the room or perhaps finding productive otherwise productive things to do in the non-virtual world) leaves this chat room… they may have been in the room for 5 minutes or a few hours
– After a few minutes (or hours), Person A attempts to return to the room by scanning through their Favorite Room list… however, they discover the Favorite Room list is now empty. None of the rooms formerly in it before they logged off are now present.
– The room is still active and has had constant particpation (in other words, the room never expired for lack of occupation)
– Person A starts over again with the first step and asks someone for another invitationAs to your comments about cutting/bleeding edge software, I agree totally. Unless you need a particular new functionality, it’s not for the faint of heart. Call me a masochist, but enough people rely upon me for advice and direction in the world of computers I view the use of the latest version as justfiable for my purposes.
Not only do I get a chance to shake out the newer versions (and provide input, feedback, and bug reporting where appropriate), it also leaves me in a somewhat knowledgeable position to be able to advise friends/acquaintenances as to whether the new version is worth their time/trouble/risk or not.
I agree totally with your assesment of Avatars. What really shocks me is that Yahoo presents them as a major selling point. LOL!
However, there are some new features (Phone calls comes to mind) that can be advantageous in some circumstances.
As you noted, the presence of some of these new features has come at the cost of some older features with which many have become comfortable. And those are precisely the issues I point out to people when giving recommendations… In short, it all depends on what they like/dislike about the release of the product to which they’ve become accustomed.
Thanks

MemberAnother TIP when for joining group rooms (once they have people in them) is using the join command. There are a few hitches.
—>/join *g.unity_and_tolerance:1<
Here is the break down
/join <—- standard join command
*g. <
prefix for all the group chat rooms
unity_and_tolerance <
the actual yahoo group room
:1 <
standard suffix for all yahoo chat rooms these days
Additional Notes
If you are entering these rooms with a chat client, the /join command for group rooms only works in YMSG mode
but you can enter the group room in YCHT mode if you use the /goto or /follow command (I dunno beats me)
You do not have to be a member to join a room with this command, but do have to be a member to create one of these rooms once it falls apart
I got a bunch of group rooms listed on my site along with a tutorial on how to get in and out if this message was confusing
http://www.yahlist.net/group.htm
I found that rooms like this are where many girls went to after the user room shut down.
