As many of you can probably tell Filehippo is one of my favorite places to grab the newest versions of free software and updates. But there’s a wonderful feature I don’t get to mention too often.
Maybe you’re not like me, but I don’t want a lot of programs starting automatically, taking up boot time, and then the only real purpose they serve is to go out and see if there are program updates. Realplayer and Quicktime are so good at doing that! So I generally disable most programs from doing an automatic check for updates – with the BIG exception of ANTIVIRUS which should always be allowed to check for updates.
Filehippo has a wonderful Update Checker you can download to your desktop. Just click the little Hippo Eyes…it connects to Filehippo…scans to see if you have any software from the sites they support, and bingo! You have a list of any available updates as well as a section for beta updates. You can then choose which ones you want to install.
The Update Checker works on any Windows PC running Vista, XP, 2003, 2000, ME or 98. It also requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 be installed on your machine. If you don’t have it, it will simply tell you that when you try to download the checker, and it provides a link to get .NET if you need it.
All in all – I find it a very useful tool to run once a week (when I do routine maintenance on my machine) and grab my updates to my software. Perhaps you’ll give it a try! If you do – please let me know what you think.

February 28, 2008 at 1:51 am #167582PhilipModeratorOooh…thanks, Doris. Now we know how geeky you can be :p I’ll give the Update Checker a try when I get around to it. Wonder whether they have a “stop procrastinating” program?
February 28, 2008 at 1:18 pm #167584Doris KenneyParticipantHey Philip! I’ve been working on the “Stop Procrastinating” program for quite some time now. But I’m thinking it must still need some tweaking because I keep putting off getting back to finishing it….ROFL!! I’ll know it’s out of Alpha when I finish it, and you can be my first Beta tester!

-Doris-Doris, believe it or not, I did actually try out the Update Checker at Filehippo: not bad, not bad at all. The only disagreement I had with it was the prompt to upgrade my Nero 7 to 8 (hoplessly bloated and a PITA to install and run). Besides that, no problems.
February 28, 2008 at 9:44 pm #167585Doris KenneyParticipantI don’t think of them as prompts – it’s just a listing of software you might wish to update. It’s entirely up to you (and I assume you didn’t update Nero.) Alas, every time you use it Nero will show, but you can choose to ignore it (like I do the YH beta 9.0 LOL). Glad you found it at least a little useful.
-Doris-April 9, 2008 at 9:28 am #167587unkenMemberi know of other similar program, update notifier from cleansofts.org
works like update checker from filehippo but has the list in the program.. not on the webpage.. also it has a watchlist .. to monitor some other programs that i don’t have installed…
does anybody know of other alternatives? having where to chose from was always a good thing.
cheers
May 6, 2008 at 3:13 am #167588DekaBreakMemberI just got the program and already loving it. However, I have a question.. can anyone explain to me how I can get it to scan for AIM updates? I know you can add folders and subfolders.. and I’ve added 2 different folders along with their subfolders… but AIM still isn’t being picked up, and there was an update for it.. being I just downloaded it from FH.com…
May 6, 2008 at 11:02 am #167586Doris KenneyParticipantI’ve love the updater, but notably, AVG 8 Free was not showing up this week either. I know you can change the path as well, but since I always install in the default locations I’m not even sure how you do it. I’ll cross my fingers you figure that part out.
But as for the updates – I guess no program is 100% all of the time. It’s also still beta so there will be glitches from time to time. I’d say for the most part it does a really good job, and if you know there’s an update not showing, I’d just go grab it.
Hope you continue to enjoy Filehippo and the updater. It’s a wonderful site and I’m really glad I was introduced to it – makes life SO much easier!!
May 6, 2008 at 1:10 pm #167583PhilipModeratorI’m another Filehippo update checker fan, thanks to Doris. It’s easy to use, and gives me the choice of which updates to install. Plain and simple.

True. Maybe with a later update release it will pick up some of the programs it doesn’t pick up now.. and I will continue to use this. I put it on both my PCs and even sent the link to a few friends to download it. :woot:
