MemberI have installed the Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 1 Operating system, and I must say I am extremely pleased with it.
The whole thing is like glass, yet it still uses the old style engine. The new style is called “Aero” as opposed to XP’s “Luna”. What’s neat about this style is that all the edges of the windows and the titlebar is like glass, you can kind of see through it all, making for a much cleaner, 3D look. Also, when windows popup or you get a little information box, it doesn’t just “appear”, oh no, Microsoft thought that too lame. SO they decided to add little 3D animations to every window control, from maximizing to closing and opening.
Another thing I was immensely surprised at was the new “Windows Search Engine”. This utility indexes in real time all of the new files that go into non-system folders, indexes them, and thus provides instant search results. No more “Windows is searching for Files and Folders”, Oh, no, it knows where they are already.
Oh, why am I even going to try to explain it? Here are the pics:
I can’t wait! 🙂
Sorry for the horrible quality, I had to use MS Paint in Vista and it still butchers JPG files.

Participantheh, i have to admit i’ve been mildly curious to see what this looks like… i’m not planning to rush out and pick up a copy the moment its officially released, but i’ll end up working with it sooner or later. although, i gotta say it’s starting to look rather Mac-esque with some of the visual styles… hmm.

ParticipantI’d installed Windows Longhorn beta last year and it looks like an enhanced version of XP but a few new features were great but this year Longhorn turning to Vista, that’s incredible. I like the style.
I’m still using Longhorn beta on a different partition let’s give Vista a try now:)September 8, 2005 at 9:59 am #129686MartinBradley
MemberLooks nice. I wouldn’t mind using it once it comes out…but I suppose there would be all the usual compatability problems, so I guess I’ll wait a bit until manufacturers have released all their Vista drivers.

ParticipantLook excellent! I don’t have a partition right now or anything, so I guess I am stuck until the actual upgrade comes out :(.

KeymasterHave you encountered any problems with it yet Spike? I probably won’t get it until a year after it’s official release. It’s bound to have a whole new set of security problems I’m sure. I really think the folders and such still look the same. The rest looks “glassy” as stated. Besides a new look, what features are new or have you encountered?
By the way what would the requirements be to use this? how much disk space and memory and etc etc.?

MemberWell, MiamiGuy, a few problems have arisen, such as vertical folder listing with no options (Ex. iTunes > Edit > Options > Advanced > Change Location of My Music Folder), it freezes the application. But other than that, I run Fireworks, mIRC, Maxthon, and even iTunes perfectly. Obviously with IE7, Trillian doesn’t work, though.
I ran Vista on a 3.00 GHz P4 with 512MB RAM, and it works fine. Unfortunately, I only partitioned about 6 GB for vista, and I’m having second thoughts about it.
The only new features I see are shown in each of the screenshots, and include the ‘All Programs’ Menu, the Windows Search Engine, the whole redesign of Windows Explorer, and the new Aero Theme. I only played around with it for a bit, I’ll try to have another look when I get home tonight.

KeymasterThanks for sharing the screen shots. Windows Vista Looks interesting, but I don’t have time to deal with the hassles of a beta OS right now.
Besides the GUI changes, have you found anything that makes it MUCH better than XP?

I think its more than a skin for XP, with the transparent titlebar and start bar, it requires more than just a .msstyle :).September 9, 2005 at 1:33 am #129690Spike
MemberActually, it’s just a .theme file, I’m sure it has the same Themes engine as XP, but I’m in no hurry to test it out on XP just yet.
