MemberYou give a strange list of filenames below, I think that you made a mistake with your search instructions. The filename you should use in your search is RTCDLL.DLL and the full-stop before the last three letters is very important. Try searching again using the above filename.

MemberTo Deadeye: I wondered if you have tried the suggestion in my last post or the advice to try SKYPE given by Arniesbrother. I have downloaded SKYPE on to two computers, one running in Windows XP (with the XP firewall enabled) and the second in Windows ME protected by the EZ firewall. Skype seems to work fine on the XP computer but causes the computer to hang on the ME with the firewall enabled and I am still trying to find out why this happens.

MemberNo, I dont trust Skype as I heard many comments that Skype is nothing more but an effort to load your computer with malicious spyware and an open invitation for people to jack your system.
I solved my problem by simply formatting my computer, and installing WinXP instead of Win98 that I initially had. It works just fine now.
By the way, Skype is only recommended to XP users, Hyde, maybe thats the answer to the problem you’re dealing with.July 2, 2004 at 8:20 pm #91563TomHyde
MemberTo Deadeye: It is pleasing to know that you have successfully used MSN Messenger but your solution is not suitable for everyone. Upgrading an operating system is neither sinple nor cheap and must be cariied out carefully in order to avoid losing valuable files which have been created on an earlier operating system. Now you can help others if you can tell us if you need to disable the XP firewall in order to use voice messaging in MSN Messenger.

MemberTo Deadeye: Could you please tell us where you found the information about Skype’s shortcomings. I used Google to try to find out more about Skype and I found this webpage which suggests that computer users try it:
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1563
I shall do some more searching to find out what other people say about Skype

MemberNo, I have the WinXP firewall AND Kerio personal firewall enabled, MSN audio remains unaffected.
Now as for Skype, it doesnt matter what the producer says about it 😉 but the people who used it.
I’ll enlighten you. Visit this link http://www.download.com/3302-2349_4-10280860.html?pn=1&fb=2Just a look on the bad comments from disapointed users worked like a ”Stay away” sign to me.
If you want it though…its your choice.July 9, 2004 at 8:00 am #91565TomHyde
MemberTo Deadeye: Thanks for the information – I visited the website given below and have now removed Skype and it’s relations using Uninstall, Spybot and Registry Mechanic. I also removed manually any other files that were installed at the same time as Skype. I suppose the moral is: If it’s free ask the question “why?”.

MemberNothing is free, there’s aways a price for everything. Skype is not recommended as an option to the MSN audio problems.

Hello Tom! I’m sorry about my poor English! My name’s Roger, I’m from Sao Paulo,
Brazil. I’d like (if it’s possible) your help or tip to solve my MSN voice
problem. I’ve already read all of messages from the “BigBlueBall forums”. I did
all that you’ve said to solve this problem, but without sucess. If you have any
idea about it I’d like to hear you! Look my system’s configuration (everything
in English): Windows XP Home; Antivirus AVG; Firewall ZoneAlarm; MSN 6.2.0137;
currently I’ve 4 RTCDLL.DLL installed in my computer, 3 of them version
5.1.2600.0 (..system; ..system32; ..lastgoodsystem32), and 1 of them version
5.2.4949.1001 (..winsxsx86_microsoft…). I’ve been crazy trying to make the

I will try and help you – click on my name in the column adjacent and send me an E-mail message. When I receive it I will add your E-mail address to my contacts list and you will need to add mine when you receive an E-mail from me. We can then try to use MSN together.

MemberSeems like everybody gives diff story. So I can not be an exception.
I am using MSN messenger version 6.2. I can sometimes use audio conversation ONLY by accepting my friend’s invitation. I was never successful in the other way around. Further more, not all the time I can successfully chat with my friends even though they initiate the audio conversation.
I tried almost all the suggestions posted in this forum, but with not luck.
My op is xp pro with sp1. I disabled the socket scheduler as suggested by microsoft.
Am I missing anything? Please help!!!! I almost become desperate now…
Big thanks.

ParticipantHello All!
I too had problems with my MSN Messenger 6.2 voice conversations. It was just completely unresponsive and would not work at all, yet the webcam and everything else was working fine.
I stumbled upon this forum through a google search and read with interest all of the posts here, and as a result I am now able to hold voice conferences, and have a fully functional system, so Many thanks to you all, especially Tom Hyde and Pete M whose posts I found particularly helpful.
Now, I’ll try and help everyone else who is in the same position I was in by explaining exactly what I did. The problem my system had was with the RTCDLL.DLL file. I believe Messenger 6.2 definitely carries a corrupt version of this file, so I went to Pete M’s webpage at http://www26.brinkster.com/petem266/ and downloaded his very helpful files (I didn’t tell Microsoft!!!!!!) and replaced the versions of RTCDLL.DLL I had in my System32 file with the one from the website and it worked fine, my brother in law had the same problem and this fix mended his computer as well.
I think the important bit is to rename all the other versions of the file as .old from .dll and choose replace if prompted when pasting the replacement version of the file back into System32.
Once again, many thanks for your help guys.

MemberHi, great forum, I was having problems with no audio on my pc with MSN messenger 6.x. I followed the instructions on renaming the .dll files specified, uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of MSN messenger, and disabling the qos packet scheduler. Worked great thanks!
NOW my dad has the same problem on his pc and I can’t recieve any audio from his end. I was able to get audio before, now he renamed the .dll files to .old, deleted and download the latest version of messenger and still no audio. The difference is that he has a dialup internet connection with Juno. Is this why he clicks on Network Connections nothing is present(network/internet connection) so there is no Qos packet scheduler to uncheck. He is running Windows XP and we know that the mike does work in the camera. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, CarloOctober 10, 2004 at 8:21 pm #91615beaver56
MemberAfter 2 months of trial and error, today I was able to use MSN Messenger with both audio & video in and out, from Miami(FL) to Madrid(Spain). Following is list of all adjustments/setups I performed in chronological order, the final adjustment probably the most critical, but who knows which of the other factors were also needed as a combination. I have tried one thing at a time, which I have kept in a tabular form log. I can’t provide detailed instructions for all adjustments, they are published in this and many other sources. My thanks to all that contributed to individual items. Here is the list:(1) use latest RTCDLL.DLL files (2)QoS off (3) e450.voice.microsoft.com site in IE 6.0 trusted sites (4) Intel network adapter latest drivers (5) Put MSN Messgr in trusted zone of Zone Alarm and switch off XP firewall (6) Use of MSN Msgr 6.1 instead of 6.2 (7) Disabling Westell 2200 router function by going to IP passthrough mode (8) Put Zone Alarm in MED setting for the internet, connecting and switching back to HIGH once connected. If anybody has trouble finding detailed instructions for any of the items I can try to do help as time permits. For reference, here are details of my configuration: Dell 4600, XP Pro, DSL connection using Westell 2200 modem/router, Intel Pro 100 network adapter, Zone Alarm (free) firewall. Good luck to those still having problems! Roberto.
