MemberIt is vital that you rename or remove all of your old copies of the RTCDLL.DLL files before downloading the latest version of MSN Messenger. Using Windows XP – click on Start/Search and then type RTCDLL in the “Search for files or folders named” box. Then you can either delete all of the RTCDLL.DLL files that you find or rename them from RTCDLL.DLL to RTCDLL.OLD. You should then be able to download the latest version of MSN Messenger 6.1 which will contain the correct version of the RTCDLL.DLL file. In older versions of Windows I think you need to use the instruction “Find” to search for files. Try this advice then report back whatever result you get. Best of luck.

Quote:quote:Originally posted by maasman2I’m having troubles with audio and MSN messenger 6.1 and in particular with trying to delete the RTCDLL.DLL file. I’ve followed the instructions of T.Hyde, but the 5.2.4949.1001 keeps coming back. I’ve downloaded the latest MSN Messenger 6.1 (6.1.0.211) and the ‘old’ file won’t go away.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way I’m running WindowsXP Professional, no firewall, Linksys router BEFW11S4, broadband cable.March 17, 2004 at 9:34 pm #91623maasman2
MemberThanks for your quick reply. I’ve deleted all the rtcdll files and it comes back on both my desktop and my laptop. Finally, my desktop crashed (for an unrelated problem), I rebooted and its gone. Don’t know what I did, so I can’t repeat this on my laptop. HOWEVER, I’m very disappointed to say that the audio still doesn’t work (on my desktop with the correct rtcdll file). I get video ok, but when I try audio I get “the network or computer you are trying to reach is experiencing a problem. Please try again later.” My friends computer can video and audio communicate with others, so its not his computer. I’ve done all the other ‘fixes’, turned off firewall, enabled UPnP on my router, disabled QoS Packet Scheduler etc. Any further suggestions? Thanks again for the help!

MemberSorry I cannot help any more, I have no experience of using an internet connection through a router. My system connects to the internet via a cable modem.

MemberI am totally confused. I have both Windows Messenger (v4.7.2009) and MSN Messenger (v6.1.0211) installed on both of my WinXP SP1 computers here in Australia and my fiancee has both versions installed on her WinXP SP1 pc in the Netherlands. Under Windows Messenger we can easily conduct voice chat but have never been able to conduct a single voice chat if EITHER of us logon with MSN Messenger 6.1.
After reading this and other threads I thought to try the advise given here but I have completely different findings. Firstly I already have 3 versions of rtcdll.dll on my system in 4 different locations:C:WINDOWS$NtUninstallQ323322$rtcdll.dll – (version 5.1.2600.0)
C:WINDOWSServicePackFilesi386rtcdll.dll – (5.1.2600.1106)
C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32rtcdll.dll – (5.1.2600.1106)
C:WINDOWSWinSxSx86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.RtcDll_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.2.1_x-ww_d6bd8b93rtcdll.dll – (version 5.2.4949.1001)Now MSN Messenger 6.1 appears to use version 5.2.4949.1001 of rtcdll.dll located in the last location. When I attempted to change/rename that rtcdll.dll it always got replaced. Upon a bit of searching we found that if we rename the file “MsnMsgs.Msi” (located in: “C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMSN Messenger 6.1.0211”) that we can freely replace version 5.2.4949.1001 with either of the other versions of rtcdll.dll.
All this is to no avail as we have both replaced this rtcdll.dll with 5.1.2600.1106 and 5.1.2600.0 (remembering that the dinamic link library in “C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32” is already version 5.1.2600.1106) but we still cannot establish a voice chat with MSN 6.1.
Now the next stage would be to replace the rtcdll.dll in “C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32” version 5.1.2600.0 but to do this I need to turn off ‘Windows File Protection’ to prevent it being replaced all the time but I am not keen to do this.
Could someone who is conducting succesful voice chats with MSN 6.1 please tell me what each version and location of rtcdll.dll you have installed on your pc??April 12, 2004 at 5:56 pm #91593goff123
MemberSaskiasImp,
Sorry to hear about yr problem. I am not technical and know little about computers but I had a similar problem like you and all I did was disable the QoS packet scheduler, installed MSN Messenger 6.1.0.211, put my Zone Alarm firewall to Moderate, made sure that the other side I am in contact with has the same, Win XP pro SP1 and I got video plus audio both ways. (my daughter’s second name is Saskia.. from Giethoorn )
Regards

MemberThank You goff123,
We have tried disabling the QoS packet scheduler on both our pc’s but that only resulted in my fincee losing all network/internet capabilities and she had to resort to reloading an image of her C: back onto her pc to repair the damage.
Later this evening I will try this again on both my pc’s at home and see if I can establish a voice chat with myself to see if this fixes the problem.
(if it works I have to talk her into trying it again 😉 )April 13, 2004 at 2:52 pm #91625SaskiasImp
MemberOk, just finnished trying to get an audio connection between MSN 6.1 on my 2 WinXP machines with QoS Packet Schedueler disabled. Sadly it doesn’t make any change to my problem. The pc receiving the audio request accepts but the pc initiating the voice chat never sees that the connection was accepted. Any ideas?

MemberDoes the Audio/Video Tuning Wizard on MSN Messenger confirm that both are working OK on the two PC’s ?

MemberSurly someone can find a solution to this MSN Messenger 6.1 audio malfunction. I’ve tried everyone of the suggested “fixes” and still cannot talk. Dimension 8250 – XP Pro – DSL – Intel(R) PRO 100 M – Linksys BEFW11S4 (1.42.7) Set to static IP per Linksys support. Audio/Video Tuning works flawlessly. HELP

ParticipantHi Guys,
I have had the same problems with MSN 6.1 and no audio when connecting 2 computers up. I have the problem even when connecting one W98 up to a WXPsp1 inside the firewall just running through the router. I have not tried any of the suggestions from this forum since I only just found you. But I kind of gave up and downloaded some software that really works not this (excuse my language Windows S…) honestly how much money is Microsoft making a year and how many software engineers do they have???
No, if you are just interested in voice and not all the other gimmicks then I suggest you download the Skype software at http://www.skype.com that really does the job and seems to get trough the firewall no problem. These guys seem to know what they are doing.
And no I don’t have shares in this company, though it would have been nice, because I am sure these guys will be doing well in the future, before you know it Billy will must likely trying to buy them out.
Here you have it.
Cheers,

I forgot to say and you don’t have to mug about with all the various windows drivers or libary files to make Skype work.

MemberThought I would add this…..
I had the exact same problems here as everyone else. Tried renaming .dll files, tried installing older versions of MSN messenger but I still couldn’t get it too work. What I did find out was that I use Vcom’s Fix-It Utilities and this was the sole problem.
Uninstalled it and wahey, I now can communicate with everyone I need to. If you have similar problems, look here first I would suggest.
