The problem with version 6……. is most likely caused by a conflict in the versions of rtcdll.dll file that handles most of the IP to IP voice/video streams. Messenger 6 installs a ‘bad’ version of this file
and they don’t ‘click’Also downgrading from 6 to 5…the dll from the version 6 install remains there causing the problem. Same for other downgrades from 6. So that won’t solve the problem automatically. Removing the dll that 6 installed before downgrading is necessary. But why downgrade ? 6 is ultimately more fun anyway 😉
What to do ?
For 95/98/ME users………………………
Search your pc for the file RTCDLL.DLL (located in the c:windowssystem32 folder) check the file version by right clicking the file->properties-versions-file version
The good file version for 98 etc is 4.0.3599.0 which is installed by 5 as a default. If you have version 5. something rename the file to rtcdll.old and install MSN Messenger 5. It will install version 4.0.3599.0 to your pc. (or get the file (500kb) elsewhere)
So after replacing the rtcdll.dll in your system32 folder with 4.0.3599.0 version test the voice chat. If it does not work…. ask your counterpart for their operating system and version of the file.
For XP Pro the good file version is 5.1.2600.0 and others may work also. The person at the other end must search their machine for the file as previously described and also replace it.
Also testing the 98 rtcdll.dll in XP (backup your file before replacing) can be an interesting experiment. It should not mess your pc, only your messenger and with any luck and “charm” the damn thing will work.
Tested working voice chat setup (with and without simultaneous video stream) 98 with 4.0.3599.0 version of RTCDLL.DLL and Messenger 6.0.0602 XP Professional with 5.1.2600.0 version of RTCDLL.DLL and Messenger 6.0.0602
Of course before all this you should check if you are behind a router, your firewall setup etc etc, but this solution worked for me and finally made voice chats with and without video in MSN 6 to MSN 6 despite operating system (all my contacts have replaced the files..well almost all) possible.

Membertoo add to this challenge of voice with msn. I called Dell support and asked them to help me fix this problem they told me i need the file rtcdll.dll version 5.1.2600.0. I was told to go to microsoft.com to get the dll. To my dismay i could not find it. If anyone has that file on there pc (xp home) Please send it to me.

p.s. I am unable to voice on yahoo as well all tests show my equipment as working.

MemberHalf Duplex Sound Card conversing with a full duplex sound card – Is this my problem?
I’ve been following this thread, as I too am having problems getting audio to work on MSN messanger 6.0.
Before I start deleting and uploading different versions of the .dll file(with some trepidation as I’m a computer dimbo) I was wondering if some one could give me a bit more info.
Problem – same as most of the above, when using MSN messanger 6.1 I can transmit audio sucessfully (I can be heard and seen at the other end), but I can’t receive audio. I can receive webcam images
I’m on a Dell Dimension 4550 machine, with XP Home Office.
Going to control panel/sounds and audio/hardware, I note I have
Intergrated HALF DUPLEX sound card.As I understand it this means I cannot transmit and receive audio at the same time. The person I’m trying to talk to has full duplex, so they can do this.
Could my microphone be staying ‘open’ i.e transmitting sound when I am no longer talking and the room silent. How does the mic sound card know when to transmit and when to receive?
Should I get this card changed out, before I go diving into the bowels of my operating system looking for .dll files?
Your thoughts appreciated…

I have a Dimension 4600 windows PX prof and I had this voice problem like you for some weeks. Finally I ONLY unenabled the QoS from my Lan cable connection and the voice came! I do not know how or why! But the other opposite person talking to you must also have Windows XP. At first I also tried by exiting Zonealarm firewall and also my XP ICF (internet Comm Firewall) but now I have them both on and I am working both ways with Audio and video on MSN Messenger.
Good luck.

MemberGoff123,
Cheers, but I tried that last night to no avail.
LAN cable – Local Area Network? I have a dial up modem so no LAN involved or am I being daft? Told you I was a computer dimbo
I think I’ll have a bash with these .dll files tonight.

Make sure u’ve downloaded the latest drivers from the manufacturers websites
Firstly, make sure you’ve gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning Wizard in Messenger.
To do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Audio Tuning Wizard,
then go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices. If you are using type of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.)
make sure that in the Firewall program’s settings that Messenger is set to
“Permit All”, “Allow All” or “Medium”(GIVE MSN MESSENGER FULL ACCESS)If your on WINDOWS XP and are using a router (with UPnP support), you may need to remove the current port forwardings.
To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections.
Right-click the “Internet Gateway” (should be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties.
Choose the Settings button, click each ‘msmsgs’ or ‘msnmsgr’ entry and then choose ‘Delete’ to each one.
close Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.Turn off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so, click Start, then click the Control Panel.
If you’re in category view click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections.
Right click your network/internet connection, then click Properties.
Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try again.February 13, 2004 at 8:26 pm #91614hansen494
MemberLike most of you, I have trouble with msn messenger 6.1. I feel that I have tried everything. Finally I found this great site.
Everyone says to delete the RTCDLL.DLL, but i have deleted the file, booted the computer, uninstalled the messenger program, installed an older version. But the “BAD” RTCDLL.DLL keeps coming back. How can I make a file-delete permanent in XP?
Hope someone can help.
In advance, THANKS A LOT!Hansen494

MemberTo Hansen494: Look at my posts on Page 4 of this forum and follow the instructions. Briefly these are
(a) Locate all copies of the RTCDLL.DLL file on your computer and change the extension .DLL to .OLD for each one;
(b) Uninstall your current copy of MSN Messenger then download the most uo-to-date copy of MSN Messenger 6.1 (6.1.0207) from the Microsoft download website. This will also load the correct version of the RTCDLL.DLL file (version 5.1.2600.0).
(c) Restart your computer.
(d) Disable QoS packet scheduler on the Local Area Connection Properties/General file.
MSN Messenger should now function correctly if you temporarily disable your firewall whilst you are trying to use audio. Naturally the person with whom you are trying to communicate should do the same. If this procedure is OK you can now erase all of the RTCDLL.OLD files.T.Hyde
