MemberI installed a Hard disk drive from my old computer that was running Windows 2000 to my new computer, runnning Windows XP. I just have the old one as a slave (secondary) drive.
When I am in XP, and I want to access the old hard drive, it says that I have to format the drive. Does this mean that I will lose everything on the drive? or does it just mean that it needs to reconfigure the drive so that it can be read.
Thanks.

MemberYou’ll lose everything.
This is probably due to a different or older filesystem format or bad sector. Run through it with chkdsk and see if that helps. If not, you’ll just have to format it.

No. Windows 2000 supports all the same filesystem types as Windows XP.

MemberIt already has a drive letter assigned to it, its just not reading the data on it for some reason. It thinks its all free space.
Also when I start up the computer now, I have to press F4 in order to continue loading XP…how do I stop it from asking me to press F4?
Thanks.

ParticipantSo go to disk management and read what it says about the disk. It should be Healthy.
And what does it say other than ‘Press F4’ while booting?

I think “Press F4” is because he has the slave drive in, and his BIOS or something in the startup sequence prompts for the boot drive, maybe?May 3, 2006 at 2:09 am #143575lazyturbo
MemberThe drive is healthy…and during startup it just says “Press F4 to Resume”.
