I heard through the grapevine that some of you were complaining that I didn’t listen to any of your feedback. Well, I’ve tried. To help sort this out, I’ve compiled all the past feedback on the new design in this topic, along with a status. This is all the feedback I know about from the forums. If I missed something, you need to add it here. If you have new feedback, please post in the public BigBlueBall Suggestion Box.
- Dr Kimble design – Partially implemented. The templates had to go because they didn’t work well (columns not aligning, etc.), so I took her colors and gradients and applied them to the default vBulletin templates. This rearranged some things, as you’ve seen.
- Need to copy gradients to bigblueball.com (Emily, can you reply and attach the gradient images here please?)
- Topics vs Threads – Planned. We decided to use the term Topics instead of Threads (which is what we used on the old forums. This requires extensive edits to the phrase library and to images such as the “New Thread” button.
- Signature/Avatars On/Off – Implemented. We went around and around on this issue. In the end, here’s what I did.
- Both signatures and avatars are turned OFF for guests. If you’re not logged in, you don’t see either. This will conserve bandwidth, make the forums load faster, and give things a nice clean look.
- When you register, you see both signatures and avatars by default. Users have the option of turning off the display of signatures, avatars and inline images, but not only images in signatures.
- Users cannot create a signature unless they have at least 10 posts. After 10 posts, they are promoted from the “Registered User” group to the “Vested User” group. Promotions are scheduled to run hourly, so it might take up to one hour after their 10th post before they have that ability.
- Users cannot upload a custom avatar until they are a member of the “Vested User” group (10 posts or more). They can, however, select from the library immediately upon registration.
- IM Centers Update – In Progress. Graham had some great ideas for updating the MSN Center (which could apply to the others as well. So far, we’ve added a static “Top 10 Site” list. Here’s what’s left to do:
- Add Rolando’s skin to MSN Center
- Add news feeds back in
- Update introductory text
- Threaded/Hybrid/Flat View – Completed. We discussed whether people should have the option of these new views and decided they were not necessary. This also negates the need for people to click the “quick reply” icon before the quick reply form become accessible.
- Forum User Interface Feedback – In Progress. There was a lot of feedback provided on the new forum UI. Some of it we never reached agreement on, but I’ll try to capture all the points here:
- Adding member group stars or buttons for staff – I’m still mulling this over.
- Member Online/Offline indicator. As requested, this was replaced with a graphic. I still plan to create a custom graphic for the indicator.
- user_offline.gif
- user_online.gif
- Signature divide line does not match. Done. I replaced the default with a single-pixel horizontal rule.
- Add more space between the Reply button and content. Done.
- Rearrange columns to match Snitz ordering. Planned.
- Left-align content in What’s Going On section. Done.
- Make navigator/Login section same width as forums. Done.
- New Forum Icons. Planned.
- announcement_new.gif
- announcement_old.gif
- forum_new.gif
- forum_new_lock.gif
- forum_old.gif
- forum_old_lock.gif
- Remove Post Icons. Not sure about this one. I’ll post a poll.
- Remove option to add a title to replys. Not sure about this one. I do have the option to set the default reply title to the initial topic title with “RE:” in front of it. Need more feedback.
- Remove the boxes around each item in the Postbit. Done.
- Update the smileys. Done.
- Color change for staff names. Done.
- Stars vs. Bars for member rank. Mulling this one over still, along with rank titles.
- New Topic icons. Planned.
- thread.gif
- thread_dot.gif
- thread_dot_hot.gif
- thread_dot_hot_lock.gif
- thread_dot_hot_new.gif
- thread_dot_lock.gif
- thread_dot_lock_new.gif
- thread_dot_new.gif
- thread_hot.gif
- thread_hot_lock.gif
- thread_hot_lock_new.gif
- thread_hot_new.gif
- thread_lock.gif
- thread_lock_new.gif
- thread_new.gif
- “Legacy” style postbit. Done; implemented as user-controllable option.
- Member Reputation Configuration. I decided to leave it enabled, and with the default vBulletin settings (which allow you to take away reputation points). We’ll try this for a while and see how it works. If it becomes problematic, we can always change it.
That is all of the “old” feedback that I could dig up from the Moderator’s forum and the beta forums at hisbuddyicons. If you feel I’ve missed something that was previously discussed, please post a reply to this topic. If there is something new that was not previously discussed in the forums, please post a new topic in either the Suggestion Box or the Bug Reports forum.
